Here are some of the top players who will be on the floor Friday and Saturday at the UJ Shootout:
Joe Hurlburt, Enderlin
Hurltburt is one of the best players and prospects in Class B North Dakota and has Enderlin in the rankings at the Class B level. The 6-foot-9 sophomore is impactful on both ends of the floor, averaging 26 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. He gets to the free throw line and he’s been more efficient so far this year than he was last year.
Tyler Loe, Dakota Prairie
One of the best pure scorers in the state, Loe leads a Dakota Prairie team that is capable of making a run in Region 4. The 5-foot-11 guard is a terrific long-range shooter and has the burst to get to the paint and finish. He’s also a solid playmaker.
Jase Crockett, Northern Cass
Crockett is a rock-solid two-way guard, using his speed and quickness plus solid strength to apply pressure on the ball defensively and get to the rim and make plays offensively. Crockett was a double-figure scorer a year ago for the Jaguars and is the go-to guy now.
Steele Hansen, Oakes
Hansen is capable of putting on a show offensively, as he’s excellent as a shooter and slasher. Hansen has been a beast on the glass early in the year too, averaging better than 13 rebounds to go along with 20 points per game.
Cale Mathern, Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier
The top returning scorer for EKM, Mathern is a consistent offensive piece because of his ability to do multiple things. He’s good in transition, has the strength to score through defenders and the range to threaten from the 3-point line.
Gus Hurlburt, Enderlin
Hurlburt hasn’t gotten going full tilt yet this season, but he’s still impacting the game in a lot of ways. The 6-foot-7 sophomore forward is averaging 11 points and nine rebounds, and does a good job defending multiple positions and contributing as a secondary playmaker.
Jake Avdem, Dakota Prairie
Avdem averaged 14 points, six rebounds and three assists last year for the Knights and is a consistent and effective secondary playmaker. He’s a skilled shot-maker who can also break down defenses and get into the paint.
Preston Bohnenstingl, Wyndmere/Lidgerwood
Bohnenstingl has been an excellent shooter for the Warbirds and a consistent offensive presence early in the season. His ability to knock down shots plus get to the paint and make plays make him a tough guy to contain.
Garret Meehl, Oakes
A solid starting point guard, Meehl is averaging 15 points and nearly six assists after averaging 14 points per game as a sophomore. His outside shot hasn’t been falling early in the year, but he’s excellent at getting into gaps and making plays.
Michael Thomas, Medina/Pingree/Buchanan
Thomas is undersized, but he can fill it up from all over the floor. At 5-foot-7, Thomas is hard to stay in front of, and he’s got the range to threaten defenses from well beyond the 3-point line.
