Okay, we are not LeBron but we still love us some high school action on a Tuesday. Here are some of the day’s best standouts and top scorers throughout the state.
Deshon Carter – Denver South
In a surprising 68-65 victory over Dakota Ridge, the Rebels got the best from their best player. Carter finished with 27 points and that was all while not making a single 3-pointer. He barely even went to the free-throw line which means he got what he wanted. He is one of the most capable scorers in the Denver Prep League and Dakota Ridge found that out the hard way as he led his team to a victory.
Turumbil Zaki – Denver South
In that same game, it was Zaki who was also able to get going as he had 22 points in the game. Zaki was efficient in his attack as he went 6-10 from the field and let the game come to him. The big man was also able to show off a bit of range as he went a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and made four FT’s. The Rebels will need him to continue scoring and affecting the game in a variety of ways if they want to make a bit of noise and turn their season around.
Trevor Baskin — Pomona
Trevor Baskin has been one of the most consistent players in 5A the past two years and the way that he has started out this season it is easy to see why he is one of the top players in the state. In Pomona’s 70-41 win over Prairie View Baskin almost singe handily outscored Prairie View himself, the Senior finished with 34 points as he went 11-16 from the field and could not be stopped as they fouled him over and over. He had 14 FT’s attempted in the game and he had made 12 of those. He also was able to grab 16 rebounds as one of the more impressive stat-lines of the year. Baskin has started to show off his athleticism as a dunker, he knows hiw way around the rim as he backs down smaller defenders and gets around bigger ones and he is putting it altogeher for more big games. Huge game from him on Tuesday.
Langston Reynolds – Denver East
The top sophomore in the state has continued to show out to begin the season and in what was supposed to be a test for East, they rolled as he led the way. Langston finished with 28 points in the game as he went 12-14 from the field and he had only one miss inside and a 3-pointer that did not go in, other than that – he dominated. Langston found a way to get to the free-throw line and remains one of the most difficult players to maintain in transition as it leads to easy baskets. Reynolds also finished with eight rebounds, five assists and his four steals also turned into some offense. There is PLENTY of time to check him out but give it a go right now and just imagine what he will be in two years.
Zion Ruckard – Eagle crest
In what we deemed as the game of the night on Tuesday, the player that stood out most was Zion Ruckard who just might be the most improved player in the state. The way that he has approached this season and helped his team remain unbeaten in-state while being the leading scorer and assist-man has been something to watch. In Tuesday’s game, he did much of the same as he finished with a game-high 22 points while looking like the best player on the court. He attacks the paint and has a set of go-to moves that are too much for guards to handle. He uses a quick first step to get the defender off-balance and either dishes it off or finishes – against Fairview he scored. He stayed going downhill all night and he also had a few coast to coast finishes that helped the Raptors prevail 63-62 in overtime.
Jalen Ashley – Rock Canyon
Rock Canyon has been a team that has not been talked about much but have gotten off to another solid start as they sit at 5-1 on the season. Their most consistent player and top scorer have been Jalen Ashley who in their big win over Bear Creek was able to get them out and running again. He finished with 19 points as he went 8-10 from the field and showed what makes him a special scorer that can score at all three levels. He is a two-way player that has range but wants to use his strength and speed to get to the basket and make teams pay. Bear Creek had no answers for him this week.
Aj LaCabe – Vista Peak
In Vista Peak’s 47-42 win, the Bison only had one player score in double-figures and that was AJ LaCabe. LaCabe was able to go off for 21 points and be the focal point of the offense for the night. He was very aggressive going 9-11 from the charity stripe and showed that no matter the pace he can still get his own as he is a playmaking scorer that can create for himself off of the dribble and get to the line. I would like to see him build off of this game as he is one of the few players on the team that can create for himself and also plays off-ball for easy baskets as well.
