The Prep Hoops Colorado crew got out to a couple of games around the state but also went to Maxpreps to check out who it was that had some solid games. Here are the top scorers from Tuesday night.
Javonte Johnson – Cheyenne Mountain
We already knew that he would be making the list for his senior debut as he is the returning scoring champ from 4A last season and had one of his best scoring night’s of the season against Widefield last season. He picked up exactly where he left off last year as he had 27 points and did a bit of everything as he also had 14 rebounds as well. Johnson is one of the best two-way players that the state has to offer and he is also one of the versatile. He plays with passion and for his teammates, it just so happens that he has the ability to score when he wants as well. Big senior season coming for him where he will surely be in the running for the Gatorade Player of the Year.
Wade Jones – Cheyenne Mountain
Jones is only a junior and after a huge summer where he was one of the most explosive scorers of any class it is time to take him a bit more serious. He showed that he is not only a perfect compliment next to Javonte Johnson but is a standout in the junior class that belongs among the top of the list. He added 25 points in Cheyenne Mountain’s opening night win and also had five steals to go along with it. These two will be one of the best 1-2 punches in the entire state and if Jones is able to keep having scoring night’s like this with Johnson leading the charge – watch out.
Luke O’ Brien – Columbine
O ‘Brien is one of the top players in the entire state and he showed that in his Senior debut. The University of Colorado commit became Columbine’s All-Time leading scorers as he put up 26 points while also making only one three pointer. It means that O’Brien used his size and was aggressive and got to the rim. He also recognized the mismatch and attacked it as he shot 13 free throws on the night. In a close 58-56 win over Mullen the Rebels needed their best player in school history to play well and he surely delivered.
Brayden Carter – Mullen
Mullen lost a close one on Tuesday evening against Columbine but a player that stood out on the night was big man Brayden Carter. He was very effective on the night and kept the Mustangs in the game as he finished with 21 points and remained aggressive throughout the night to keep Columbine on their heels. He is an athlete with great size and is very active both on the boards and getting to the ft line. With a couple of players missing from last year’s team this will be a big year where he surely rises up our rankings as Mullen will lean on him to led the way.
Blake Ferguson — Brighton
Sr. guard Blake Ferguson is not a player that we have ever wrote about but made sure that he stood out on opening night as he scored a game high 21 points to give Brighton a 68-66 victory. He got going from beyond the arc, knocking down three 3-pointers, got to the free throw line a ton and was the leading scorer in the game. He is a player that we will surely keep an eye on as the season progresses.
Greysen Carter – Fairview
Jr. wing Greysen Carter was a player to watch heading into the season but we did not know he would come out with such a big game on opening night. He put up 21 points and also had nine rebounds as well to helped Fairview get by state runner ups, Chaparral. Carter is consistently showing us that he is a player that we need to take a deeper look at and was one of the biggest standouts.
