Continue ReadingThe Torrey Pines Holiday Classic is perennially one of the top post-holiday tournaments in the country. This year is no different.
Held at five sites sprawled across the San Diego region, the tournament attracts teams large and small from across the country competing for one of five divisional titles.
Here were some of the standouts from Day 3 of the Tournament:
Preston Lawrence, 6-4 2020 G, Lake Highlands
One of the biggest surprises of this year’s tournament was Lawrence, as complete of a high-school player as you’ll see. He is an efficient scorer from all three levels, a great passer on the move and gives a great effort defensively and on the boards. He is committed to Rogers State, a high-powered Division 2, but the fact he had no D1 interest was shocking.
Laku Lado, 6-10 2020 C, Lake Highlands
Lado is as raw as they come offensively, but the long, rangy center has excellent athleticism, rim-running and shot-blocking capabilities. He has a chance to develop with a redshirt year somewhere.
Thomas Tyler, 5-11 2020 PG, Cardinal Newman
The cat-quick scoring point guard has unlimited range on his jumper, and is unafraid to take big shots, but his ability to drive and score through elite length was most impressive.
Silas Christie, 6-4 2021 W, Cardinal Newman
Christie is built like a Bonzi Wells (yes, I dated myself) and plays like him too. He did his damage around the basket and on the offensive boards, where he outplayed Lake Highlands’ significantly bigger front line. He also supplied the play of the game, a two-handed dunk that came out of nowhere, showing off his sneaky bounce. There’s a place for Christie at the collegiate level, given his productivity, motor, athleticism and nose for the ball.
Josh Beadle, 6-4 2021 G, Cardinal Newman
Beadle has nice size and length on the wing, and his jumper is smooth off the catch. His upside his undeniable. He needs to clean up his handle with his off hand as well as his decision making to reach his high-level potential.
Noah McDavid, 6-5 2021 G, Lake Highlands
McDavid ended the game bloodied, but showed toughness that belies his wiry frame. He exploited backcourt mismatches and was able to score in the paint and step outside and hit the college three. His ball handling needs to improve to allow him to score from midrange and off the dribble.
Jaden LeBel, 6-3 2022 G, Foothills Christian
LeBel is having a breakout tournament, scoring from all over the court and becoming a reliable wingman for Yassine Gharram. He’s shooting the ball much more consistently and can attack the basket off the dribble with improved results.
Brendan Perry, 6-3 2021 G, La Costa Canyon
Perry played a big role in the Mavs win over Mira Costa in a Governor’s Division consolation match. The wiry scoring guard has added bulk to his frame and is finishing much better through contact and with his off hand. He is also a very solid shooter off the catch.
