Recent small school guard having success at the next level is ex-Layton Christian Academy star Mark Burton who is a junior and is excelling at Fayettville State a Division 2 school that is currently 11-2. This year the Top three scoring layers are small guards from small schools besides one who is a bigger wing from a small school. These players often get over-looked so here is a closer look at them.
6’1 Sr. Derek Smith of Delta High School
Derek had a huge junior year and continues that moving on to his senior year. His career high is 45 and had already put up 38 points this season. He can score from different spots on the floor but is dangerous in the mid-range and he knows how to get to the basket. He finishes well after contact as most schools in smaller classifications don’t allow easy buckets.
6’2 Jr. Ky Brown of Beaver High School
Ky is one of those guards that doesn’t seem to run out of energy. He just keeps going. He plays great defense as he averages almost 4 steals a game. He has worked on his vertical as he is now finishing above the rim. He is an unselfish guard that makes the right play, but he is able to go off for 20 + on any given night. He rebounds the ball well for a guard too.
5’10 Jr. Jaime Montalvo of Wendover High School
This kid has a great feel for the game. He knows his spots and tries to get to them often as he likes to play in the up and down pace. He is an above average three-point shooter as he he can hit 4 a game in a hurry.
5’10 Jr. Zack Engelbright of Summit Academy High School
Zack is another face paced guard that likes to attack the rim. His jump-shot has improved but he likes to rebound the ball himself and get going in the open floor. He likes to set up his defender and change speeds when attacking the basket.
5’11 Sr. Brayden Stoddard of Intermountain Christian High School
Brayden started the year off by scoring 42 points. Brayden loves to shoot the 3-ball. He attacks the offensive glass and defensive glass and often finds extra shots for his teammates when he isn’t shooting the basketball. Don’t be surprised if he breaks the state record for three-pointers that he holds this year.
5’11 Jr. Derek Atkinson of Draper APA
Derek is one of those hardnose guards that will get you 20 points and 10 rebounds. He shoots the ball well and finds ways to score.
6’1 Sr. AJ Owen of Intermountain Christian High School
AJ has stepped up his game running the point guard position and finding ways to distribute the ball to his teammates in different places for them to score. AJ sees the floor well and his unselfishness has enabled his teammates to put up big numbers.
Sayveon Armstrong of St. Joseph High School
He has the keys and the green light on the team. This is one of those players that you would like to see play against the best guards ina ll classifications because he can flat out score.
