Top scorers from across the state on opening night
In this article:
The 2019-20 season got kicked off on Monday and had some very entertaining games and matchups across the state. The Prep Hoops Colorado crew got out to a couple of games around the state but also went to Maxpreps to check out who it was that had some solid games. Here are the top scorers from the opening night.
Darius Hornbuckle Darius Hornbuckle 6'0" | CG Thomas Jefferson | 2020 State CO – Thomas Jefferson
Hornbuckle has always been a guard that was difficult to slow down as he is a versatile guard with a solid handle and outside jump-shot that makes it hard for opposing guards to slow down. He got his Senior season started with 23 points on an efficient 8-12 shooting from the field while also knocking down three 3-pointers. The Spartans will go through their top scorer from last season and he got the season started on the right foot.
Lucas Moerman Lucas Moerman 6'10" | PF Doherty | 2020 State CO – Doherty
The Grandview versus Doherty game was the 5A game of the opening night as it had two of the state’s best big men go at it. Although Moerman lost, he had himself a great game in front of his future Air Force coach as he was able to put up 18 points on the night and had eight rebounds and a few blocks to go along with it. He is still raw as a scorer but showed against a very stingy defense that he is capable of getting going offensively. If his offensive game catches up to his defense he will assuredly lead Doherty to plenty of wins this season and a deep playoff run.
Dylan Carter Dylan Carter 5'9" | CG Chatfield | 2021 State CO — Chatfield
Chatfield was another game that we had one of our Prep Hoops staff get out to and albeit in a loss there was a standout from Chatfield that had himself a solid opening night game. Carter showed why he is a marksman from beyond the arc that teams will have to keep an eye out for as he was able to knock down five 3-pointers on the night. He finished with 19 points in the loss and had Chatfield within striking distance. He will look to build on that game as he boosts his stock throughout the season and his production leads to wins.
Timothy Huston Timothy Huston 6'5" | PF DSST:Green Valley | 2020 State CO – DSST: Green Valley Ranch
In a nail-biting 82-81 win over Pomona, it was Huston that led the way with a big 23 points. He is an aggressive big man that is capable of putting it on the floor and getting to the rim. He demands attention from multiple defenders and powers through. He was also able to make is lone 3-pointer as well and is a player that is poised for a big year and he started out the season with a bang.
Logan Dexter Logan Dexter 6'1" | CG Mountain Range | 2020 State CO – Mountain Range
Dexter boosted his stock on Monday evening as he led Mountain Range to a much-needed victory. He finished with a stat line of 21 points, six assists and also recorded 13 rebounds from the wing spot. Not sure how much better the 6’1 wing could have done as he led his team to victory while also showcasing his versatility. He knocked down three 3-pointers in the game but also got inside and finished and kept FNE Warriors on their toes all night.
Pete Boyle – Boulder
Boyle is a player that we will surely keep an eye on this upcoming season. His 16 points in Boulder’s opening night victory was great as he adds another scorer on a very good and deep Panther team that plays together. Boyle is fresh off of signing to play at the next level next year and his aggressive opening game ensured the victory. Great to see him step right in as the shot taker, knocked down a couple of 3-pointers and was efficient inside.
Trevor Baskin Trevor Baskin 6'8" | CG Pomona | 2020 State CO — Pomona
Last but not least, although it was in a loss, Baskin had the game of the night and maybe will be of the week as he put up 41 points and also had 13 rebounds to go along with it. Baskin is a forward who had to do it all and averaged a double-double last season, but if he is having games like this where he is putting up 40+ points while also securing the paint and grabbing boards then we might just want to assess how good he truly is. Excited to get out and see a Baskin takeover game.
