Continue ReadingThe Ingraham Rams treated their home crowd to a win in the team’s league opener against the Seattle Prep Panthers. The Rams were without 6’10” Senior Mitchell Saxon and starting point guard Maui Sze, but their shooters put on a spectacular display from deep, knocking down fourteen three-pointers as a team. Ingraham Senior Tyrell Moore led all scorers with 23 points. Seattle Prep’s star Sophomore Tyler Mrus had a tough shooting night against an impressive Ram’s defense but still managed to rack up 14 points to lead the Panthers. Ingraham maintained a lead throughout the game and Moore’s second-quarter buzzer-beater put the team up by eight points at the half. Their lead grew to as many as twelve points before the Panthers began to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, narrowing the lead to four points with under three minutes to play before Tyrell Moore knocked down a dagger three – his seventh of the game – and sealed the deal for the Rams. The final score was 63 to 58.
Tyrell Moore | 6’6″ SG | Ingraham
The Senior Captain for the Ingraham Rams was absolutely on fire. He knocked down seven threes and was fouled on an eighth attempt – he would convert two of the three ensuing free throws. After banking in his first attempt, he went on to show off his versatility from deep. He hit threes off the dribble, of spot-ups, and at the height of a third-quarter run by the Rams, he tossed in a nasty stare-down three that extended the lead to double digits. Moore also knocked down a buzzer-beater before the half, and his seventh three of the night put the game to rest with less than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Moore also assisted on two more three-pointers from teammates Ja’Von Ervin and Latrell Jones.
Coz Collins | 6’0″ CG | Ingraham
Collins, another Senior for the Rams, also put on an impressive display of shooting, hitting big threes in the second quarter that created a lead that the Rams would never relinquish. After knocking down his first two threes in the early minutes of the second quarter, Collins nailed a 24-foot heat-check that put the Rams ahead by nine. He would add a free throw and a mid-range jumper and finish the game with 15 points.
Tyler Mrus | 6’5″ F | Seattle Prep
The class of 2022 standout didn’t have his best shooting performance but remained aggressive and effective especially in the first half of the game in which he scored 12 of his 14 points. He hit a mid-range jumper in the first quarter, a three from the top of the arc in the second, and showed off his strength with hard-earned buckets from inside the key. Mrus added a highlight-reel block in the second quarter, pinning Latrell Jones’ lay-in attempt against the glass. He sprinkled in a few assists throughout the game before fouling out with 1:35 to play in the fourth quarter.
Braeden Smith | 5’11” G | Seattle Prep
Another impressive Sophomore, Smith finished the game with 9 of his teams 58 points. The 5th ranked player in the class of 2022 took the lion’s share of point guard duties and protected the ball against an active, swarming defense. Smith book-ended the scoring for the Panther’s with a back-door lay-in in the first quarter and a late-game drive in the fourth. He added a three-pointer, assisted on two more, and went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Smith has smooth handles and showed off a killer hesitation move, and he added a couple of steals on the defensive end.
Ja’Von Ervin | 6’4″ W | Ingraham
The lone Junior in the starting line up for the Rams offered consistent contributions throughout the game, scoring 2 points in the first quarter, 2 in the second, 3 in the third, and 4 points in the fourth quarter to finish with 11 of his teams 63 points. Last year, Ervin averaged more than 12 points per game for Lakes High School in Lakewood, Washington. One of a handful of transfers, Ervin hopes to help his new squad make a run for the Metro League title, and they’re off to an impressive start.
Honorable Mentions:
Neven Marinkovic | 6’4″ F | Seattle Prep
Prep’s third Sophomore starter contributed an efficient 10 points with a three-pointer to close out the first quarter, two spot-up jumpers from mid-range, and 3-of-4 points from the line. He drew a charge in the second quarter and added strong defense and rebounds throughout the game.
Malek Gomma | 6’6″ F | Ingraham
The Sophomore didn’t find his way into the score book, but he was still able to make an impact in limited minutes. Gomma has great length and athleticism, and even with his thin frame, he had great physicality under the basket, collecting rebounds and blocking shots.
