Coaches are figuring out their rotations while the players are adjusting to playing with new faces. Many of the top teams in South Jersey are returning their top scorers, while others are in need of a new top-end scorer. South Jersey is filled with talented scoring duos that should light up the scoreboard in 2019-20.
Wildwood Catholic: Taj Thweatt 6’7 PF 2020, Jahlil White 6’6 SG 2020
The Crusaders have one of the top duos in New Jersey in Thweatt and White. The duo combined to score over 1,000 points last season and have played together for three seasons. The former is an athletic power forward with the ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor. The West Virginia commit is a double-double machine and can knock down perimeter jump shots. White is a slashing two-guard who excels at getting to the free throw line. Wildwood Catholic took Ranney to overtime in the Non-Public B South final last season and is looking to take home the title this year behind its veteran duo.
Camden: Lance Ware 6’9 PF 2020, Jerome Brewer 6’6 SF 2021
The Panthers have multiple options to be their dynamic duo, but Ware and Brewer are the top returning scorers from last season. The latter paced Camden with 15 points per game and has a knack for scoring the basketball. Brewer ended the season with a pair of 20-point games and will be looking to build on that early in the season. Ware never takes a play off on both ends of the floor and excels at finishing around the basket. Freshman DJ Wagner might end up as Camden’s leading scorer, but the Panthers need Ware to score like Brewer for them to have a special 2019-20 season.
Trenton Catholic: Jamir Watkins 6’7 SF 2020, E.J. Evans 6’4 SG 2020
It was tempting to put junior guard Freddie Young Jr. in this spot, but the Princeton Day School transfer has never played a competitive game with Watkins. Evans is a versatile shooting guard who can attack the basket and stretch the defense from behind the arc. His ability to space the floor is the perfect compliment to Watkins’ slashing style of play. The VCU commit excels at getting to the basket as he uses his strong frame to finish through contact. Watkins is also a solid shooter from deep and can hold his down low. The Iron Mikes only won 16 games last season, but they should exceed that mark in 2019-20 behind Watkins and Evans.
Paul VI: Wisler Sanon 6’2 CG 2021, Jaylen Boyd-Savage 6’3 CG 2021
Sanon and Boyd-Savage may not have the same type of name recognition as some of the other players on this list, but they compliment each other perfectly. The latter is a slasher who excels at getting to the free throw line and finishing through contact. Boyd-Savage is working on his jump shot, which will offer Sanon more space to operate. Sanon can score from all three levels and is capable of heating up in a hurry. The Eagles won 25 games last year and are looking to repeat the feat behind Sanon and Boyd-Savage.
