Continue ReadingHoliday hoops were hot and heavy during the week of Thanksgiving. Holiday classics and shootouts in Natchitoches, Shreveport, Lakeview, and Monroe saw great action before turkey day. The week ended with big showcase tournaments in New Orleans and Dallas. In this week two edition of the starting five, I will highlight five players who deserve this week’s starting nod.
Brandon Boston, Jr. / 6’6″ / Sierra Canyon / 2020
2020 SG Brandon Boston Jr.The Kentucky signee was nothing short of spectacular on Saturday night. His 24 points were scored in a variety of ways just as any pure scorer in high school. He hit jumpers, drove to the hole, and scored running the wing. He is as solid of a defender as any other top level recruit. Boston is not afraid to rebound either as he garnered some key rebounds in the second half. Honestly, it was the game you expected out of a top 10 recruit. Kentucky is definitely getting a great player in Boston.
Micah Peavy / 6’7″ / Duncanville / 2020
Micah Peavy was another top tier player I saw on Saturday and he did not disappoint either despite the loss. Peavy went for a double-double (18 pts. 12 rbs) against the Trailblazers tough defense. He is as active as any forward I have seen. Peavy can score it from the perimeter and in the paint. He also changes ends like a gazelle. His ability in the open floor to get up and down was extraordinary. I was pleasantly surprised at his anticipation as he had six steals on the night as well. The Texas Tech signee is a truly deserving player and definitely one of my starting 5 for the week.
Harrison Ingram / 6’7″ / St. Mark’s / 2021 (pictured above)
Ingram is a new school player with an old school feel. On top of that, he does so many things well on the court, it is hard to point out his best attribute. In his game against Prolific Prep, he scored at will from the block. He maneuvered which way he wanted until he scored or found an open teammate. Ingram proved he could put it on the deck as well. In one instance, he almost dunked on a help defender trying to stop his drive. Ingram does not let the pace speed him up at all. He takes his time and makes the right play. Whoever signs Ingram will be get a player with a basketball IQ that equals his skill on the floor.
Delatrion Moton / 6’4″ / Woodlawn (Shreveport) / 2021
A player who fits the same bill as Harrison Ingram is Delatrion Moton. During his Thanksgiving Classic game against Huntington, Moton displayed why he is one of the top juniors in Louisiana. Whether is was full court pressure, man-to-man, or double teams on the pinch post or wing, Moton made play after play. He made a couple of open threes or drew fouls on drives to the paint. If that was not enough, he made skip passes to open shooters. Moton was in total control on every offensive possession. Huntington has no answers for him. He was definitely starting 5 material this week.
Michael Pryor / 6’5″ / Woodlawn (Shreveport) / 2020
Pryor was the best post player on the floor against Huntington on Wednesday night. The long, rangy senior outworked his 6’8″ opponents for extra opportunities numerous times on errant shots by the Knights. Pryor finished on a couple of those offensive rebounding instances as well. His night also included knocking down mid-range jumpers. This helped in the draw and kick game that he and Moton played with the Huntington defense. His 15 point night was a key part in Woodlawn dispatching district foe Huntington by 18. By his effort alone, Pryor deserved starting 5 honors this week.
Other candidates were Daniel Ortiz and his 30 point effort at versus South Beauregard, Herman Key against North Caddo, and Kenny Hunter versus North Caddo.
