For a game that enjoyed multiple lead changes, Blackman certainly made the outcome appear convincing. For the ninth time in the last 10 meetings, Blackman (PrepHoopsTN #6) defeated Siegel High. The final score of 58-51 fails to convey the back-and-forth nature of the game throughout.
Siegel entered the PrepHoopsTN Top 10 earlier this week, but the loss could jettison them out again. Blackman will remain in the Top 10 for the fourth consecutive week regardless of all the other results. How did it happen?
Closing Time
Blackman was up 48-44 with 1:41 left in the game.
At 1:33 Matthew Schneider hit a 3 from top of key! It made the game as close as could be, 48-47 with 1:30 left. The celebration was brief though. Jalen Page quickly finished a layup on the other end. The ball traveled completely around rim. Swirly, surely.
50-47 Blackman.
.@Martise_34 Jackson is playing spectacularly. Tips back a missed 3 off the backboard. Schneider missed the 3, tho he made a big 3 with 1:10 left.
Martise locked up Ray Tyler during a critical possession to force a rare turnover on the Tusculum-signed PG. 54-49 BHS up.

Martise Jackson is a player a couple of teammates recommended for upcoming “Lockdown Defenders” article. He did quite well against a very gifted point guard Friday night.

Blackman leads 50-47 with the ball. 46.0 seconds left. Siegel pressuring the fullcourt.@Iamraytyler2 Tyler fouled. Heads to FT line. 43.1 left.
FT Good! FT Good!52-47 with 43.1 left. Siegel has the ball.

Brennon Marsh converted a layup, an important layup with 10.7 left! Marsh gets the Starmen to within 3 points, 54-51.
SHS fouled Jalen Page right away.
Page hit the first free throw. Siegel called timeout. Page hit the second to make the game 56-51 with 9.6 left.
Siegel worked to hurry into a “all-out” set. “Stolen by BHS. Ray Tyler dribbled out the clock…almost. Fouled. Ray Tyler hit both free throws.
Blackman quieted the home crowd with a massive mid-December win. Blackman players were visibly hyped about the victory.
In Defense of…
Martise Jackson was the best individual defender all night. As mentioned above, he forced turnover on ordinarily sure-handed Ray Tyler! Martise Jackson was straight up on Ray Tyler and worked his defensive magic.
Siegel extended some pressure. Blackman played solid quarter-court man. Both defenses were solid, staunch. The first half was akin to two horses walking through La Brea Tar Pits.
Unique Play from Matthew Schneider
Matthew Schneider ended the half with a remarkable and-1 (missed FT though). Under five seconds, dribbling near halfcourt, Schneider pump faked his man into the air. Realizing the clock was dwindling, Schneider attacked directly down 1st avenue. Though a 6-foot-6 player challenged him at his peak, Schneider averted the block and got the ball up high off the glass as he fell to the side of the lane fouled. Schneider’s teammates ran over to enjoy the special play.
Siegel took a 23-18 score to the half. They could not keep Blackman so quiet in the second stanza.
One-Sided Rivalry?
Blackman winning again extends the domination to 9 wins in the last 10 meetings. Though Siegel finished 3 or 4 of those games with a single point, the results speak loudly on behalf of the Blaze. Siegel is now deep enough, talented enough for this loss to be considered a tiny upset, considering Siegel hosted.
Both teams entered the contest ranked and both will challenge for a Class AAA State Tournament spot. For Siegel’s sake, the scales need to start to shifting away from the tradition-rich BHS program.
