University City pulled away in the second half to take a 63-46 victory. Here is a look at “The Best Of” from Thursday morning’s game.
Best Shooter: Larry Abbey (University City) – 5’9″ 2022 point guard scored a team-high 15 points and made all four of his 3-point attempts. He is an excellent with the dribble penetration, but he displayed his perimeter shooting chops as Soldan employed a zone defense.
Best Scorer: Phillip March (Soldan) – The 5’10” 2021 combo guard scored a game-high 17 points for the Tigers. He’s a shooting guard in a point guard’s body who can really get buckets. He has very good 3-point range, but he was also got into the lane and finished well after some nice dribble drive moves.
Best Ball Handler/Passer: Larry Abbey (University City) – When he wasn’t knocking down 3-pointers, Abbey his creative handles while dropping dimes at the same time. He is strong with the ball and will stay low on the dribble to play through contact to get to his spots.
Best Athlete: Jalen Hampton (University City) – The bouncy 6’5″ 2021 athlete had 14 points and 10 rebounds while showcasing some electric athletic ability. He runs the court with ease and displayed his explosiveness around the rims with four slam dunks.
Best Low Post Player: Elijah Bishop (Soldan) – The 6’6″ 2020 forward has a thick body and a classic low-post game with good fundamentals and footwork. He has a nice jump hook over the left shoulder and a baseline turnaround jumper going in either direction. He knows how to use his body to get excellent position to set up his variety of moves.
Beat Offensive Rebounder: Brandon Ming (University City) – Even with his athletic teammate Jalen Hampton on the floor, the 6’4″ Ming really loves to attack the offensive glass. The 2021 forward had three offensive rebounds on Thursday. He is relentless and he has a good second and third jump around the rim.
