Whitefish Bay: Bay’s one-eighty from last week came when least expected.
They lost by two points to Martin Luther in their debut last Friday, falling to 0-1 before limping into a brawl with a red-hot Nicolet team. But Bay flipped the script, winning versus last year’s State champions then rolling into a momentum win over West Bend West.
The two marquee wins are leverage in a very stiff North Shore conference and prime resume builders come playoffs seeding.
Milwaukee King: For the second week in a row, King raised eyebrows across the prep basketball landscape. As Wisconsin’s resident sleeper team, they’ve continued to knock off powerhouses (this week, it was West Allis Central) while keeping their loss column spotless.
And, in what may become Milwaukee King fashion, their thumping teams with absurd offensive numbers. This week, Central fell victim to an 80 point swell, while their win against Shorewood earlier in the week was secured by 94 points from King.
Kenosha Bradford: Kenosha Indian Trail ran into a blazing fire in Kenosha Bradford. The 84-73 win moved them to 3-0 on the season and gives them leverage in an uber-competitive conference.
Cedarburg: Cedarburg tripped up Grafton on Tuesday, punching a conference title favorite in the mouth in their season debut. They’ve fixed a rapport with that top spot, and with more marquee games on the horizon, the potential for early separation is tangible.
Honorable Mentions:
SJNMA: Led by one of Wisconsin’s most entertaining backcourts, SJNMA edged out Brookfield Academy this week, but followed that up with a loss to Milwaukee Lutheran.
At this point, they’re fighting for elbow room with Racine St. Catherines for the top spot in division three. The Brookfield Academy win proved that, along with the bulging hype train that followed this team throughout the offseason. However, the loss pushes them into the Honorable Mentions.
Sussex Hamilton: Hamilton picked up a win over Milwaukee Bay View at the Terry Porter Classic and a win over Germantown the night before. The back-to-back dubs are impressive, but with the best player in the country on their team, Hamilton plays with a high bar to meet.
In short, this is a routine week for them. However, bouts with Brookfield Central and out-of-state powerhouses may strike a different chord.
