Coming into the game, I would bet that no one thought that Millennium had a chance at winning since Sierra Canyon has so much talent on their team and are nationally ranked. However, I had a feeling that Coach Ty Amudnsen and company would have something up their sleeves.
Yes, of course Sierra Canyon had more talent than Millennium has on their roster but Millennium had more heart and grit. I thought Justus Jackson really stepped up his game and showed that he can play with anyone in the country. We’ve seen him do this against other top teams like Mater Dei, when he had to match up against Kentucky commit, Devin Askew. Much like that game, I felt like Jackson elevated his game and competed with those top kids. It was a very strong showing for Justus Jackson.
DaRon Holmes also did some great things. I thought that he looked very good defensively, being the defensive anchor for his squad. Holmes also had some highlight plays/put back dunks. I guarantee that caught a lot of people’s attention!
Holmes and Jackson are the stars of the team but I also thought that Millennium’s role players came in and did some solid work. Michael Batchelor, Robby Devries, and Justice Marmara all really stepped up and did their job.
Batchelor played really well on ball defense and pushed the pace of the game in transition.
Devries knocked down the majority of the shots that came his way.
Marmara was able to match the speed and athleticism of the opponents a little better than most. Marmara even had a pretty break away dunk!
Overall, Millennium may have lost the game but I think it was a great showing from them that they should not hang their heads on. They played a great game and went toe to toe with one of the most talented teams in the nation.
