Patrick Baldwin Jr. – 2021 – W – Sussex Hamilton
It took a while for the Chargers to start clicking offensively on Friday. Baldwin was the one who kept them close throughout the first half and eventually took the game over after halftime. A consensus top-five player in the 2021 class, Baldwin played like it and then some. Finishing with a game-high 39 points, Baldwin was simply sensational in a hostile environment. At 6-foot-8 and highly skilled, Baldwin just makes shots that nobody else in the country can replicate. While he’s known for his shooting ability, Baldwin’s defense was equally as impressive. Baldwin used his length and athleticism to play the passing lanes, affect passes, and block shots. In the latter stages of the game, Baldwin shut down the paint and was a big reason why Tosa East’s offense began to stall.
Leon Bond – 2022 – F – Wauwatosa East
Bond didn’t score a ton, but showed some major flashes and also did a great job on the glass. The sophomore forward scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a high level matchup. One of Bond’s flashes came when he was trailing on a screen, blocked a 3-pointer, then received the outlet pass, shook a defender on the dribble, and dunked on the other end of the floor. The 6-foot-5 combo forward has such a high ceiling and if/when he develops a jump shot, will be an extremely difficult player to guard.
Jay Hinson Jr. – 2021 – G – Wauwatosa East
Hinson helped Tosa East get off to such a strong start and he was a big reason why Hamilton was playing from behind throughout the first half. Hinson came out and buried a couple of 3-pointers, one of which he was fouled on. Also matched up with Baldwin for a large part of the evening, Hinson, despite giving up about six inches, performed admirably on that end of the floor. There’s only so much you can do against a player of that size and caliber who can get any shot he wants. Hinson often forced Baldwin to score going away from the basket, versus giving Baldwin rhythm jumpers with his momentum going towards the hoop. He finished with 14 points in the loss.
Brian Parzych – 2021 – G – Wauwatosa East
Toughness, moxy, a will to win, Parzych had it all despite Friday’s loss. When it looked as if Hamilton would pull away in the second half, Parzych wouldn’t let his team die. The junior guard energized the crowd with back-to-back 3-pointers and a couple of tough drives to the rim against contact, eventually making it a one-score game with just a few minutes left to play. Defensively, Parzych also had two steals that led to scores on the other end. A high motor guard who can play on and off the ball and mix in scoring and facilitating, Parzych holds an offer from Northern Michigan. There should be a number of Division 2 programs prioritizing him beginning this spring.
Carson Smith – 2020 – SG – Sussex Hamilton
Smith had 15 points for the Chargers. The Northern Michigan commit had a couple of momentum-changing 3-pointers in the first half, connecting on back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to momentarily silence the crowd. Smith has been playing some of his best basketball as of late. The 6-foot-1 guard has a ton of confidence shooting the ball and can snap off triples in the blink of an eye. Smith hit a total of three triples in Friday’s win.
Notes
– Sussex Hamilton as a freshman by the name of Luther Smith, who played big minutes on Friday. Smith also hit a gutsy 3-pointer late in the game, finishing with six points.
– 2021 guard Tanner Resch only scored seven points, but put the nail in the coffin with a corner 3-pointer after Tosa East was surging and cut the lead down to two points with about a minute remaining.
– 2021 wing John Lovelace had 12 points for the Red Raiders.
