Ryan Conway | Dulaney ’21
Dulaney edged Havre De Grace by a final score of 63-49. The Lions held a double-digit lead in the first half before the Warriors made a run in the fourth quarter to make it a close game. A big reason for their early lead was the play of 2021 point guard Ryan Conway. Conway finished with a game-high 25 points and did the majority of his damage in the first half where he found openings in the defense without the ball for catch-and-shoot opportunities. Conway was efficient with those looks and later took advantage of hard closeouts from defenders by attacking and finishing around the rim. Stanford head coach, Jerod Haase, was in attendance for Conway. It’s safe to say he liked what he saw in the 6-foot-1 guard.
Marlon Lewis | Havre De Grace ’21
Lewis got into some early foul trouble that kept him out for more time than his team would’ve liked. Still, the 6-foot-4 wing led the Warriors with 15 points as he relentlessly attacked the rim. Lewis did a nice job of seeking contact on his way up and drawing fouls. He had one particular finish in transition off a lob pass from a teammate where he soared to the rim for a thundering two-handed dunk that sparked a Warriors’ late run.
Mark Statz | St. Maria Goretti ’21
This was my first time seeing Statz as he was first off the bench for head coach Sid McCray in their dominant win over Thomas Johnson. Statz has good size and build at 6-foot-4. He connected on two triples and a nice take to the basket on his way to 10 points. He nearly had a put back dunk off a teammate’s miss that showcased his athleticism. He competes on both ends and was an effective communicator when off the ball defensively.
Tra’Shawn Lewis | Edmonson ’20
Lewis is the type of player who sets the tone for his team. He plays with admirable energy and passion that forces teammates to work harder on both ends. There was nothing New Town could do to contain the 6-foot-4 long-limbed wing as he ferociously attacked the offensive and defensive glass. He converted a few offensive rebounds for buckets for and-one opportunities and made the crowd aware of what he did. Lewis was active in the passing lanes, which led to a breakaway two-handed slam in transition as the Storm took control of the game after falling behind in the first few minutes. He’s going to keep on coming at you. No matter if he missed his last four or five shots, Lewis doesn’t allow his confidence to deteriorate.
Martaz Robinson | New Town ’20
Robinson had an efficient outing against Edmonson. The 6-foot-2 guard doesn’t let pressure speed him up or force him into mistakes. He stays strong with the ball as he steps through traps and keeps his vision wide before locating open teammates. Robinson, a Delaware State commit, hit a handful of pull-up jumpers off the dribble in both the mid-range and three-point areas. This New Town team will need him to take more control as a scorer this season if they plan on repeating as county champions. It’ll be interesting to see if he is up for the task.
