With some senior lead teams like Omaha South, Omaha Central, and Omaha Westside competing in the Prep Fall League, I expected to see standouts from the senior class. In this article we are going to take a look at the seniors that took advantage of their last preseason games.
Latrell Wrightsell Jr. – 6’1 Guard – Omaha Central
Latrell is a strong combo guard that can be effective from either guard position. With his senior running mate, Max Polk, sidelined with an injury, a majority of the offense today was run through Wrightsell. The senior guard looked comfortable shouldering the load, and with his size, he is a mismatch for most opposing guards. Latrell’s range extends well beyond 20 feet and his ability to attack the rim makes him a difficult cover. Through both of his games Wrightsell showed off his ability to command an offense, create shots for himself off the dribble, and make difficult shots over defenders.
Jay Saunders – 5’11 Point Guard – Omaha South
Saunders can be a nightmare for opposing teams with his continuous effort. Jay competes on defense, stays in front of ball handlers, and helps on the glass. On the offensive end, he puts constant pressure on the defense with his movement off the ball. You can’t fall asleep for a second while guarding Saunders or he will be converting a layup off a back cut before you notice. This shifty guard has an array of scoring moves that allows him to finish at the rim and draw fouls. More than once in his contest against Omaha Central, Saunders left fans wondering how he was able to convert difficult acrobatic layups over taller defenders.
Jadin Booth – 6’0 Guard – Omaha Westside
Jadin Booth is a scorer and deadeye shooter with deep range. It is dangerous to let him get going, as he showed off in his first game of the day against Lincoln Pius X, knocking in jump shot after jump shot. Once he has seen the ball go through the hoop you can see his confidence to extend his range and shoot over the top of defenders increase. Booth also showcased his ability to be a pest on the defensive end with his active hands. Every defensive possession Jadin seems to make an impact by tipping a pass, poking a ball free from a ball handler, or getting his hands on a rebound.
Zach LaFave – 6’5 Forward – Elkhorn South
Zach LaFave is a mismatch for most teams in Nebraska with his combination of speed and skill in a 6’5” frame. Zach is a good enough ball handler and athlete that most forwards have trouble keeping up with him, while quicker guards have trouble handling his size and stopping him from getting to spots he can score. LaFave rebounds well and showed off his ability to lead the transition offense himself after a rebound and covert it into points.
