The Legends of Winter Roundball Classic tipped off today from SLU High School and Prep Hoops was in attendance for most of the days early action. The noon tip-off featured a match-up between Hazelwood Central and Bishop DuBourg. After a tight first quarter, Central locked in defensively and built a 35-19 halftime lead. DuBourg did not go down quietly and cut the deficit into single digits numerous times in the second half but in the end Hazelwood Central came away with a 59-43 victory. Here are our standout performers from the game:
Swiss Army Knife: 6’2 Sr David Roberts (Hazelwood Central)
Roberts gets our “Swiss army knife” award thanks to his well rounded effort that impacted the game in a variety of ways. He impressed as a sit-down, lock-up defender that was always in stance and position. He’s a strong body driver that could bully his way into the lane but then use a finesse spin or soft touch to finish. He also can space the floor and knock down the jumper with range. Well done.
Sharpshooter: 6’5 So LeMond Shaw (DuBourg)
LeMond Shaw has improved a ton since I saw him last year and has a high ceiling. Only a sophomore, he has great size and length that allows him to get his shot off over most defenders at this level. He did a lot of things very well today but impressed the most as a lengthy wing who can really spread the floor from beyond the arc.
Swat Team Captain: 6’6 Sr Tyree Wesley (DuBourg)
Tyree Wesley had block after block after block around the rim against an athletic Hazelwood Central team. Whether it was walling up and denying post attempts or stepping over and swatting driving guards looking for lay-ups, Wesley has some impressive rim protecting ability.
Best Slasher: 6’3 Jr Aahmod Scarbrough (Hazelwood Central)
Aahmod is a tremendous athlete that is hard to guard when he is in attack mode off the bounce. Whether in transition or in the half-court he has the innate ability to get into the lane where he is a gifted finisher with a variety of moves.
Runs the Show: 5’8 So Tevin Gowans (Hazelwood Central)
Poised, under control, eyes up at all times. Tevin is a solid ball-handler that makes things go for Hazelwood Central. He has good vision and puts the ball right where it needs to be for his teammates to convert.
Diaper Dandy: 6’4 Fr Jayden Nicholson (Hazelwood Central)
Jayden is going to be one of the best players in the 314 by the time he is a senior. As it stands, he is easily one of the top freshmen in the area. He already has a good frame and plays with the strength of an upperclassmen. He is really tough on the run and had a nasty transition slam. Defends multiple positions. Can stretch it to three. Remember the name.
Best Ballhandler: 6’1 Jr Micah Holt (DuBourg)
Micah has a very quick burst and keeps the ball on a string. He consistently was able to break his man down in iso situations and is able to use his handles to get himself out of trouble when needed.
6th Man: 6’2 Jr Caleb Jones (Hazelwood Central)
Caleb came off the bench and provided a nice spark for Hazelwood Central. He is a smooth operator in transition and did a very nice job of getting to the basket and either finishing or drawing contact and getting to the line. Eight big points off the bench.
