We watched a few games at the Gahanna location and seen some good early teams. In this write up we’re taking a look at standout guards from these games.
Jalen Sullinger (2021) | 5-11 PG | Thomas Worthington
Sullinger has gotten noticeably stronger and bigger, as he’s now listed a couple inches taller. The new size helped him inside a ton, including finishing around the rim and even an offensive rebound and put back. The junior had 28 points and was the best lead guard on display Saturday night. Displayed a crafty floater and always made the extra pass, the right pass. Kept defenders on their heels by being a threat to score it or kick it out. Delivered precise passes on a dart at all times. Court vision has taken a leap for the 2021 prospect.
Sean Jones (2022) | 5-11 PG | Gahanna
Jones did what he often does in my first viewing of him in their second game of the season and that’s test the defense with speed. Pushed the ball up the court, delivered accurate cross court feeds and pinpoint deliveries inside. Used his well known spin move to finish through the lane, as well as the crossover. Knocked down shots off the bounce, which is a part of his game that is coming around. When the sophomore is knocking down jumpers he’s virtually not guard able at the high school level.
Jamarr Talbert (2021) | 6-1 WG | Richmond Heights
Richmond Heights certainly didn’t play their best basketball, but some players stood out for them at times. Talbert worked well off the bounce, getting wherever he wanted. Displayed the strength to finish through contact and even fouls at the rim. Handled the ball well and worked as a slasher as well. A couple offers already and it wasn’t hard to see why.
Omari Effiong (2021) | 6-2 WG | Thomas Worthington
Effiong was a two-way standout at Gahanna on Saturday, often because one led to another. The junior stayed in good position on defense, often in the right place at the right time, forcing turnovers. Scored in double-digits, often off open finishes at the rim. The 6-2 guard doesn’t blow you away with flashy plays but he gets it done.
Gbolahan Adio (2020) | 6-4 WG | Richmond Heights
Adio’s team didn’t play well or play good defense, but he showed some flashes on that side. Pressured ball handlers into making bad decisions, resulting in a couple steals. Used a soft touch around the rim. Jump stop and finish through the lane, working off the bounce majority of the time. Also, got beyond the arc and hit a three off the catch. Adio had a solid summer that should carry into the late fall and winter high school season.
