There were a ton of great individual performances, so I decided to break them into two with the first one being the seniors. Here’s a look at the top senior performers from day two of the Sleepy Thompson.
Teo Rice | 6’2” G | Maret 2020
The first game of the day between Maret and Highland School featured one of the best battles I’ve seen in the young season with Rice and Highland junior Angelo Brizzi going back and forth at each other throughout the game. Rice was phenomenal throughout the game as he scored a team high 20 in the first half and continued to put the pressure on, finishing with 37 in a close loss that went into overtime. He’s a big bully type of guard who can attack the lane going either direction and finishes well through contact and in traffic.
Zion Hanberry | 6’2” G | Highland School 2020
Hanberry was somewhat of the unsung hero in their overtime win over Maret, as he had a big impact toward the end of the game by making shots and hitting free throws down the stretch. He’s a solid athlete that moves his feet well defensively, he has good instincts and he’s able to make shots off the catch from deep. He finished with 15 points in the win.
Nick Reese | 6’0” WG | STAB 2020
Every team needs a Nick Reese, as he was the glue that kept the STAB group together and helped them in all the ways that wasn’t scoring. Reese handled the basketball pretty well and helped them beat the press, he made good decisions with the ball in his hands and he rebounded at a high rate throughout the game. He finished with just 6 points but also pitched in 6 assists and 11 rebounds.
Malachi Poindexter | 6’2” G | STAB 2020
Poindexter didn’t play a ton in the second half because they were winning by so much, but in the first half he showed the skill set that I believe makes him one of the best available guards in the state. He can play either guard position, he’s shifty off the bounce and he can make shots on the move whether he’s on or off the basketball.
Wayne Yen | 5’7” G | STAB 2020
Yen is almost always going to be the smallest guy on the court, but don’t let that fool you because he is skilled and he can play. He handled pressure really well and made the right play with the ball in his hands, he was 3-for-3 from behind the arc and even when he got hot he still made the extra pass and played the right way. He finished with 9 points and 3 rebounds in the win.
Nathan Kania | 6’1” WG | Hargrave 2020
It was my second time watching Kania and Hargrave play this year and he impressed yet again with his toughness and production on both ends. The lefty wing showed that he can make shots from deep, get to the cup and isn’t afraid to do the dirty work to help his team win. He finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds in their win over Carmel School.
Mazae Blake | 6’1” G | Hargrave 2020
One of the main reasons that Hargrave is playing in the championship tonight against the host school SSSAS, Blake has had two terrific games including one last night where he took over in the second half. After a tough first half from a shooting perspective, Blake completely flipped it as he stopped settling and got to the rim and then started making shots afterwards. He finished with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, showing he can do a little bit of everything for his team.
Andre Screen | 6’10” C | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes 2020
The Bucknell commit was great manning the middle for the Saints and is one of the main reasons that they are considered one of the favorites to repeat for the state championship this year. He’s a throw back big man that you can play through on the low block, he’s absolutely money over his left shoulder on the block and he’s a good passer as well. All that on the offensive end and he’s also a good rim protector who challenges without fouling.
