Continue ReadingShelby went on the road to Marion Harding and picked up a 48-38 win. After trailing at the half by eight, the Whippets came out a different team in the second half, much more poised.
Standouts:
Mitch Myers (2020) | 6-2 WF | Marion Harding
Myers was solid at times for the Presidents scoring it in multiple ways. Spot up three was falling for the senior, as it normally does. A standout play for Myers was forcing a tie up before the half, the strongest player on the floor showed it at times tonight for the Presidents. Not one of his best nights offensively, but we seen flashes of what he does best.
TJ Pugh (2021) | 6-6 WG | Shelby
TJ Pugh didn’t have his best of nights, but he was still a very good all around player for the Whippets. Got in the lane often ending in a double teamed and kicked out to open teammates or found a player on the low block for a score. Was money at the free throw line, scoring 10 of his 13 points at the charity strikes. Hustle saves stood out, throwing it off the opposing players showing pure hustle. Making the little plays to win that didn’t involve getting a bucket. All around showing, didn’t need to score to impact.
Jonny Devito (2020) | 6-0 G | Shelby
Devito kept Shelby in it in the first half of this one, scoring nine points in the first two quarters. The senior handled the ball well, as a secondary ball handler and got to the rim, maneuvering his way. Also, knocked down the three ball, at key times.
Tabias Thompson-Reece (2020) | 6-1 CG | Marion Harding
Reece was there when Harding needed a bucket tonight. The senior is shifty and can put the ball on a string, as he showed against Shelby. Facilitator at times, stepped into a three pointer off the dribble. Also, a mid range dead eye as Reece hit leaners.
Caden Morris (2021) | 6-2 WG | Marion Harding
Morris was solid, more so in the first half. In the first quarter he scored eight of his nine points. Knocking down the three, nice corner release. Used the jab step to create room for the drive. Played tough on ball defense for the Presidents.
Grant Hiatt (2021) | 5-8 G | Shelby
Hiatt was big in closing this one out for the Whippets, scoring six of his 12 points in the final frame. Found open creases in the defense, for open looks at the rim. Hit a three pointer in the first half that was much needed. Didn’t force things, game came to him and he made Harding pay when it did.
Devin Bonney (2021) | 5-9 G | Marion Harding
Bonney was a huge boost off the bounce for Marion Harding. Undersized but makes up for it with big time bounce, which he showed off on a put back finish. Scored it off the bounce, crafty ball handler. Slashed to the basket, creating nice dump offs.
Cody Lantz (2021) | 6-2 WG | Shelby
Lantz was big time in the run the Shelby Whippets made to take control of the game. Worked off ball, worked the defense for open shots, moving when need be. Finished inside with a soft touch off of wrap around passes.
Demarco Brown (2020) | 6-1 WG | Marion Harding
Demarco Brown guarded Shelby’s best player in TJ Pugh and made him work for every one of his 13 points. The junior is tough, strong and plays with a lot of energy on the defensive end. Blocked shots, created turnovers and attacked the boards. Was really impressed with his lateral movement and ability to stay with quicker ball handling. Non existent on offense, but his defense is the name of the game.
