Buoyed by a 16-4 run in the 3rd quarter, Sandpoint played the game necessary to give them the victory. This game was high octane in the first half and contentious in the second. Here are some players that stood out from the action from Timberlake:
Jacob James 2020, 6’3” Wing Timberlake
Prep Hoops Idaho’s #40 overall player showed his skill level on this snowy day in Spirit Lake. Having a game-high 16 points, James is one of the best 3-point shooters in all of Idaho. Whether he gets the ball in the corner off of a set play, or creates his own shot at the top of the key, James is a talented marksman from beyond the arch. With a long wing-span, James is able to use his length to get his shot off over smaller defenders. James has a high basketball IQ and shows it by being able to make elite level reads of the defense. He can use his length to make difficult passes to every part of the court. His length and basketball savvy showed up on rebounding as he had multiple plays tipping the ball to himself to win the battle on the boards. Defensively, James is going to have to work on his foot-speed to stay in front of quicker offensive players. He does a good job of using his body on defense and competes at that end of the court. As the season goes on, I would expect Jacob James to move up on the Idaho rankings and is talented enough to receive college offers.
Kobe Banks 2020, 5’11” Guard Sandpoint
Leading Sandpoint with 13 points, Banks has a scorers mentality. Able to knock-down 3s from the top of the key or attack the lane with a competent floater, Banks has the ability to create scoring opportunities for himself and others. Like the “Rifleman” Chuck Persons, Banks was unafraid about jawing at the home crowd or at opposing players to help fuel his strong offensive game. The best scorer for Sandpoint, Banks should be in position to have a big year for the Bulldogs.
Ryan Roos 2020, 6’2” Wing Sandpoint
Roos is a long, athletic wing defender. He can lock-in on an opposing scorer, he disrupts passing lands, and was the best on-ball defender on the court. Offensively, he can use his athleticism to make plays in the paint. Roos has the ability to make open 3s should an opposing defend sag off of him to defend the drive. With that, Roos could be a 3-and-D guy for a collegiate program.
Ashton Peightal 2022, 5’9” Guard Timberlake
This game gave us a preview of some of the future stars in our region. A player who stood out is Sophomore guard Ashton Peightal. Peightal proved that he could stretch the court by making corner 3s. He was absolutely fearless attacking the hoop. Peightal profiles as an aggressive offensive point guard who can pester opposing guards on defense with his quick hands and quick first step.
Arie VanDenBerg 2023, 6’0” Wing Sandpoint
VanDenBerg, the standout freshman from Sandpoint, made his presence felt by dropping 10 points against the home team. VanDenBerg is already a good 3-point shooter and should play quality minutes for Sandpoint. As his career continues, he should develop a well-rounded offensive game. As for the time being, the freshman shoots with confidence and converts with regularity. Over the next four years, look for VanDenBerg to become one of the top shooters in the state
