Roy Bunn is a prime example. After the quick 5-foot-10, 150-pound point guard came off the bench last season, he’s been elevated to the starting lineup and he’s quickly adjusted to the new role in the spotlight.
“The guys see me more as a leader now,” Bunn said. “So I’m just making sure everyone is where they should be at and just being that guy on the team. And I feel like I’ve improved with my scoring. I’ve been in the gym shooting, continuing to develop my jump shot. I’ve also gained about 10 pounds as I’ve been lifting.”
In Tuesday night’s blowout win over Barlow, Bunn certainly got things done offensively as he was quick to the basket where he either scored himself (13 points) or dished it off to open teammates (6 assists). But where Bunn might have made the most impact was on the defensive end. His assignment was high-scoring Jesse White and Bunn was a big factor in limiting him to only 8 points.
“I knew the game plan – he’s great off the ball,” Bunn said. “So just getting in, getting by the screens, I just wanted to shot-pressure him and not give him easy looks – that was the best thing to do.”
A number of college programs are watching Bunn’s development this season. “I just heard from the University of Pacific not too long ago – Coach Damon Stoudamire said he was going to come out to my game,” Bunn said. “He actually said that he watched the Roosevelt game, so that was good. I went down for an unofficial visit to Oregon State – Coach (Wayne) Tinkle is a good dude. And Portland is in the mix as well.”
Bunn is keeping all of his options open as he plays out this season, one that definitely is loaded with tough non-league games. Next up: at Central Catholic on Friday. “We’ve really beefed up our pre-season schedule,” Bunn said. “I think we can beat everybody if we play our game. We want to play in March, so why not see the best teams now and get prepared.”
Bunn currently ranks as the #21 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
