The now 6-foot-9, 220-pound post has obviously been working hard in class at Beaverton High School but the junior has also been quite busy on the basketball floor. Erikstrup got an opportunity to compete at the Prime Time Top 40 in town but also recently made a trip overseas for a special opportunity to compete for an international team as well.
Erikstrup is a dual Danish-American citizen so he was recently contacted by the Danish National Team to try out for their 18U squad in mid-November. It was no doubt a special experience for the emerging post player. “I flew there for a total of four, five days and it was a three-day tryout,” Erikstrup said. “The talent there – there were a lot of surprisingly tall guys and I was probably the fourth tallest guy there.”
“It was a whole different ball game, there was like a lot more passing, more fundamental and teamwork rather than one-on-one which I thought was a good experience,” Erikstrup continued. “Both coaches said they enjoyed me and thought I played tough.”
Erikstrup noted that there will be a second tryout in March and that the coaches will be watching his game film this season. The tryout came on the heels of getting the opportunity to play at the PT40 where he matched up against some of the top big men in the Pacific Northwest.
“I thought it was a great experience just to witness other talent in other leagues are,” Erikstrup said. “It made me realize how much I need to work on and how much I need to get better to compete and outwork them. It was a great experience to play against some better talent.”
Erikstrup has been happy about the way things have worked out for him. Despite battling some back issues, he put in the work on his game while playing AAU ball with International Elite. “I’ve grown a few extra inches so that’s helped,” Erikstrup said. “I feel like I’m a lot more dominant in the post than I feel like I was in the past. So we’ll just wait and see this season what happens.”
College programs continue to monitor his progress and Erikstrup indicated that Seattle University and Concordia are the two schools he’s heard from the most. His focus now is on the season and Beaverton opens things up on Friday night on the road at Sherwood.
“I think we’re going to be pretty good,” Erikstrup said. “We have a pretty good chance at going deep into the playoffs if everything goes to plan. I think we can have an even better season than last year. Individually I hope to make First Team All-State but we’ll see how this season goes.”
Erikstrup currently ranks as the #13 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
