The Danville wing suffered a serious knee injury in March and missed all the travel team circuit. Smith has returned early this season and is back to his old form. When we evaluated him he had a heavy brace on his knee, but there was no doubt that he is getting close to full health already. Smith was on fire from the jump drilling step backs, threes, crashing the glass, and scoring through contact for and-1s. One of his most impressive plays was grabbing a defensive rebound and taking it the full length of the floor for a bucket. Great to see him back and playing like the D1 recruit that he has always been! He spoke with PHI about his return to action.
“I am feeling well. I am about 80-90%. I haven’t reached my full potential yet with this leg. It has been going good. We have been having some ups and downs early this year as a team. We are just at the start and haven’t had all our players yet.”
What is new with recruiting?
“I have been hearing from Colorado State, Tulsa, Auburn, and more.”
He rattled off a list of schools that have already extended scholarship offers.
“I have offers from Oregon, DePaul, Milwaukee Wisconsin, Bradley, and UT-Martin.”
Which ones does he feel are prioritizing him the most?
“Oregon, Tulsa, and Colorado State hit me up a lot.”
The Oregon Ducks recently came into central Illinois landing Francis Okoro. He talked about his relationship with them.
“They have a good connection with me. After my games they text me.”
Colorado State has a tight bond with him as they currently have his former teammate Kendle Moore on their squad.
“I talk to him a lot because of Kendle being there and there games.”
Tulsa has been involved quite a while with Moore.
“Coach Jim Platt and I talk with each other about how I can get better. He has been encouraging me to get better.”
Smith currently ranks as the #12 overall prospect in a strong 2021 class and the #4 small forward!
