In the latest DMV top-30 power rankings, they appeared at No. 9 and it wouldn’t surprise me to see them move up a spot or so in next week’s edition. A big reason for their success is 2020 point guard DeLonnie Hunt, who boasted a stat line of 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in Rock Creek’s win over the Dragons. Despite a number of new faces on the team, Hunt feels confident in their strong start to the season.
“We play with a chip on our shoulder,” Hunt continued, “with so many knew guys added to the team, people really don’t know our talent. They just think we are good on paper. We still have a lot to prove. We have to face every game like we’re the underdogs. We don’t have anyone over 6-foot-7, so we have to be the aggressor towards everyone. We’re gonna let them know we’re here and we’re gonna do the dirty work. That’s how we are going to pull out tough dubs.”
Hunt spearheaded that toughness last night by making it apparent of his aggression to attack the rim and not be denied. He converted on eight of his 10 free-throws and in the second half, used his ability to shake his defender and get in the paint to open opportunities for teammates.
“My role has changed since last year,” Hunt told Prep Hoops. “As a junior, I didn’t see as much as I do as a senior. Like really being able to slow the game down and chop it up when I’m on the floor now, I can really see what my teammates can do or how they can best produce in a game and just keeping them involved while I’m still getting mine but in an unselfish way.”
Hunt’s intensity and willingness to do anything to win spreads throughout the roster. I imagine with his increased role, he’ll also naturally develop into a better leader. He already has leadership skills, but as a senior point guard, evaluating him in that sense will be magnified. Hunt also has some other areas for improvement before getting to the collegiate level.
“Definitely my jump shot and I always feel like I can get a tighter handle on the ball,” Hunt reflected. “I want to improve my vision with the ball as well. Really, I need to improve on every aspect of my game if I want to play at the highest level.”
Hunt holds offers from UMBC, South Alabama, Binghamton and Bryant. Hunt told Prep Hoops that UMBC and Longwood are the two schools who are in consistent contact, but he plans on taking his recruitment slow and not making a decision until the spring.
