Prospect Spotlight: Wilson Ramabu (2020)
Wilson Ramabu, a class of 2020 forward from Bishop Walsh, was a key contributor throughout his team’s season-opening win over Coolidge last night at Phase I of the Jump Ball Tip-Off presented by More than Basketball. The athletic 6-foot-6 forward was a forceful paint presence who led the team with his words and actions.
“I think defense leads to offense and communication can spread out to so many ways,” Ramabu told Prep Hoops when asked why he is so vocal on the court. “That one word or one sentence on defense can lead to so much in terms of a block a rebound or a stop.”
One thing that you have to like about Ramabu is that he can contribute without commanding many touches. He works hard on the offensive boards and scores a majority of his points from put-backs. Ramabu’s biggest impact lies on the defensive end where he acts as the signal-caller and makes sure everyone is in the right place.
“I’m an energy guy. I try to start the game up on the boards and defensively. I clean up on offense,” he stated. “An underrated part of my game is the voice that I have on defense for my team and my ability to grab rebounds.”
Ramabu stated that he’s working on adding a mid-range game and becoming a more consistent free throw shooter.
What are his goals?
“My individual goal is to get to college. Being from where I’m from in Botswana, its a small country in southern Africa. Not many people get to college for basketball. The team goals are to set the precedent for the younger guys, and get as far as we can as a program.”
It was surprising to hear that Ramabu has not yet received any scholarship offers to date, but we expect that to change soon. He is certainly big enough and athletic enough to help a low-mid D1 program, and he adds winning intangibles that coaches look for.
Wilson Ramabu is currently Ranked by Prep Hoops as a top-100 prospect in his class. To view the full ranking of Maryland and DC’s 2020 class, click here.
