Prospect Spotlight: Mazae Blake (2020)
There was a familiar face playing with Hargrave at the 64th Sleepy Thompson last week. That face belonged to Mazae Blake. A standout at Seneca Valley and with the DC Thunder, Blake was making an impact early and often for the Tigers throughout the tournament.
“We had a lot of hard work in practice this week focusing on the tournament with all these tough teams from the area,” Blake told Prep Hoops after an impressive opening round win over Maret. “I was focused on talking defensively for the most part, and the offense will come in transition.”
During his time at Seneca Valley, Blake was known for his scoring, and his shooting in particular. He once hit 11 threes in a game against Quince Orchard during which he scored 42 points. At Hargrave, he initially stood out on the defensive end. Blake applied good pressure on the ball. He was active and alert off the ball and communicated well with his teammates.
“I’m a speedy guard that can get to the basket any time,” he stated. “I can score the ball at any time I need to.”
As we saw throughout last weekend, Blake can still score with the best of them. His jump shot is still money and he is not afraid to get to the rack and look for contact around the rim. It was surprising to hear that no schools are actively recruiting him at the moment, but that should change as the season progresses.
“As a team, our goal is to stay connected. Become a family, keep pushing each other, and work every day,” Blake said. “My individual goals are to get better every day, work hard, stay in the gym so a coach can find me.”
What can he bring to a college program?
“Whatever the coach needs me to do, I’ll do it.”
