The Wisconsin high school basketball season is now officially in full swing. With plenty of big matchups in this week’s schedule, there were a lot of big-time individual performances.
Vote for the most deserving prospect on Twitter (@grant_matheny)!
Patrick Baldwin Jr. is the prospect to beat right now in Wisconsin. Every time Baldwin Jr. takes the floor, he knows that he will be getting his opponent’s best shot. Still, this doesn’t really matter. The top prospect in Wisconsin’s 2021 class just continues to produce. This week, Baldwin Jr. and Sussex Hamilton faced off with a promising Wauwatosa East team in the premier game of the week.
Baldwin Jr. dropped 39 points and the Chargers got the road victory. Tosa East threw everything that they had at the five-star recruit. Baldwin Jr. could not be stopped. And to be honest, I am not sure that anybody in the state will be successful in stopping Baldwin. He is too skilled, too versatile, and just too good to be slowed down.
It appears that Brookfield Central and Sussex Hamilton are in a two-horse race at the top of the Greater Metro Conference. It also looks like David Joplin and Patrick Baldwin Jr. are the two frontrunners for GMC player of the year. Joplin totaled 55 points in two games this week.
In case anyone was wondering, Brookfield Central and Sussex Hamilton play on January 17th and February 4th.
Wauwatosa East’s young core of prospects is led by Leon Bond. After putting up middling numbers as a freshman, Bond started his sophomore season with three really good games. He scored 46 points in three games this week.
Bond is a physical player who can really impose his will on his opponents. The future is very bright for this power forward.
Dalton Banks could be overlooked as a Mr. Basketball candidate. The point guard has produced consistently over his career, and this year will be no different. Banks led Eau Claire North to two big wins this week, with his biggest performance coming against Hudson.
Because Banks is likely to put up huge number as a senior, don’t remove him from the Mr. Basketball conversation too early.
Honorable Mentions:
Jack Rose’s 32 point performance on Tuesday earns him a spot on this list. The 6-foot-4 SG also dropped 20 points in a win over Burlington later in the week.
Carter Gilmore is off to a blazing hot start — the only problem is that Gilmore’s great play didn’t lead to a win this week. The Wisconsin commit scored 29 points in a 77-59 loss to Brookfield Central. Gilmore also eclipsed 1,000 career points.
