Continue ReadingThis year we have a new school in Mountain Ridge High School in Herriman. The Sentenials like most new schools experienced some growing pains this summer as they learned a new offense and learned to play with each other.
When the season started not many people gave the Sentenials a chance but 6’4 Sophomore Merrick Sherwood is making sure people notice.
The soft spoken young man doesn’t talk much but he speaks in volumes with his game.
Last season he was at Providence Hall a 3A Charter School also in Herriman but a new school in his boundary sent him over to Mountain Ridge High School.Merrick can score in double digits and pull down five or so rebounds and dish out 5 assist a game. He is learning to play the game the right way and be involved in all aspects of the game.
While playing with his brother growing up he learned a lot being the younger brother. “He taught me how to work hard, to never give up when times get hard. He has always been my biggest supporter and has never given up on me.”
Marcus Sherwood was a 1st Team All-State 3A player for Providence Hall.
With the way Merrick is playing you could see the hard work and preparation he has put in. “In the offseason we all put in lots of work not just on the court but also working on getting to know each other. Coach Briggs always says that we have to trust each other in order to win games. I think we are trusting each other more as the season goes on.”
That trust is noticeable as the Sentenials are off to a 4-1 start with a tough 2 point loss to Herriman late in the game. Herriman is a good team and they are showing that they can hang with them.
With players trusting each other and their coach it looks like Merrick and Mountain Ridge are in good hands. They have an amazing student section and school support. Merrick just happens to be one of the young players leading them.
