It was a packed house on hand to see this highly anticipated duel. the game featured some electrifying players. Some you may or may not be familiar with. It was a close game game until the usual suspects showed up in the second half and propelled Pinson Valley to victory. But there were also some players in this game that stepped up to the challenge and open a lot of eyes with their talent.
USUAL SUSPECTS
Kameron Woods, CG (Pinson Valley)
Scorer, Scorer, Scorer!!! The class of 2020 guard has an array of moves in his repertoire. Throughout the game, his full package was on display. He doesn’t waste any time getting going and from the jump he is in attack mode and looking to embarrass the guy in front of him. From long range three pointers to floaters to pull-up jumpers, its not much he cant do with the ball in his hands. Even though he can score, he is also a willing passer and knows when it’s time to get his teammates involved. Has a good handle and is very crafty which allows him to get his shot off in many different ways. He is stronger than he appears to be. Throughout the game he also showed off his ability to take his man to the post and create contact to get to the free throw line. As the game progressed, its as if he went up another level each quarter. He went on a tear in the fourth quarter to put the game away, finishing with 41 points on the night. Like most guys at the high school level, he needs to push himself more on the defensive end. Has a few offers on the table at the moment but look for more schools to come calling in the near future.
GaQuincy McKinstry, CG (Pinson Valley)
The #2 ranked player in Alabama’s class of 2021. He is the perfect sidekick to Kameron Woods. He is an athlete in every sense of the word. Excels in the open court. Has a solid offensive game. Gets great elevation on his pull-up jumper. Has three point range but doesn’t shoot many. Most of his damage is done slashing to the basket and in the mid-range area. Lock-down defender and seems to enjoy and take pride in stopping his opponent. Two sport athlete that can play either basketball or football or both at a high major when his high school career is finished.
Tavion Williams, F (Parker)
The senior big man from Parker showed his ability to be a presence in the paint. Very long and athletic with a nice frame. Needs to work on his back to the basket post moves but showed the ability to consistently hit the mid-range jumper. His baby hook is almost automatic. Has a soft touch around the rim. Needs to work on his lower body strength to maintain his base and position while battling in the pain. With his frame and length he will only get better moving forward.
EYE-OPENERS
Camron Scott, F (Pinson Valley)
Though the 6’6″ senior forward natural position is small forward, he spends a significant amount of time at the 4 and 5 for his team. He is able to do many things on offense and defense. Very athletic and quick off his feet. A superb rebounder who attacks the offensive glass every time. Has a fairly good handle. able to guard multiple positions on defense. Surprisingly, at his height he is a very good shot-blocker. Very active which allows him to have a big impact on the game without needing the ball. Will be a good steal in this year’s senior class.
Kambree Johnson, PG (Parker)
This guy is a gamer. He loves to compete and thrives in head to head situations. Any angle he sees to attack he will most definitely tske it. Has a very nice build and uses his body well when attacking the rim. Did a good job getting his bigs the ball at the right time when they were in position to score. Very good three point shooter. Doesn’t mind getting into his guy on defense. An explosive scorer to keep your eyes on at the point guard position.
JoJo James, PG (Pinson Valley)
A very tough guard. He is like the “energizer bunny” when he is on the floor. Never stops moving and plays hard every possession. Keeps his composure and controls the game very well when things are not going good. Very good at taking advantage of mismatch situations in pick and rolls. Can consistently hit the open three. Pushes the ball in transition every chance he gets and is good at knowing when to pull it out and set up the offense. Rounds out the trio of Woods and McKinstry. Definitely not a player you want to overlook.
