Overland is a team with a deep roster and that showed Friday evening and Fairview is a solid team that will compete with anyone in the state and give their all.
Close first half
For Overland, it was adjusting playing without their star big man Ike, after injuring himself in their last victory over ThunderRidge on Thursday evening. As for Fairview, they were coming off an excellent season opening win against a very talented Chaparral team earlier in the week. It was a slow, feel out first half for both teams on Friday night, with both teams tied at ten a piece at the end of the first quarter. Greysen Carter, for fairview led both teams in scoring at half time with 11 points, including seven in the second quarter. It was, Kaleb Chaney for Overland in the second quarter coming up big for the Trailblazers, scoring all nine of his points in the quarter on three made three-pointers to give them a 32-28 lead going into halftime. Roane Edwards, for Fairview hit a monster three pointer towards the end of the second quarter to keep the Knights within striking distance at halftime. He would finish finish with 11 points on the night, which was second in scoring for Fairview. The player that stuck out most for the Trailblazers in the first half was Vincas Veikalas who was impacting the game in a number of different ways. He finished the first half with eight points and several huge rebounds on both ends of the ball.
Overland too much to handle in second half
Overland came out in the second half with a sense of urgency on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Knights to only seven points in the third quarter. The Trailblazers created several turnovers in the quarter leading to easy transition baskets for them. They did a great job all night on, Jalen Page, holding him to only six points in the game. Overland was able to put several different defenders on Page, showing him a number of different looks. It was, Trevon Deden for Overland who would lead the way in scoring for them in the third quarter, scoring nine of his 15 points in the quarter. He hit several nice mid-range jumpers as well as a three-pointer and one that bounced in and out after a nice step-back move. Overland would lead 54-35 at the end of the quarter after overwhelming Fairview on the defensive side of the ball. Hezekiah Swanson, still does not look one-hundred percent for the Trailblazers but he had a major impact for them all throughout the game. He would finish with eight points on the night, five of them coming in the the fourth quarter to push their lead. He had a nice and one finish that got the crowd going wild, it will be fun to see how this team plays once he’s back to himself, which he showed glimpses of. Elias Hill, the 6’3 senior for Overland also had a nice game, with seven points and making his presence felt on the defensive side of the ball. Overland would outscore Fairview 20-12 in the fourth to secure the victory 74-47, holding the Knights to 19 points total in the second half.
No Ike, No Problem
Overland showed Friday night why they’re one of the toughest teams in the state to beat this year, down their star big man, they still come away victorious over a solid Fairview team that did not capitalize on the big man being out. Overland would have ten different players score in the game, with a number of different players making big-time plays when needed. Between players like, Chaney, Deden, Swanson, who have all played in big games for the Trailblazers and adding additions like Valentinas Ulinas and Vincas Veikalas, Overland is going to be a force to recon with once they all get some more games under their belts playing together.
