Continue ReadingMichigan’s Mr. Basketball is one of the most prestigious titles in all of high school sports. Some of the all time greats and legends of the sport have held that honor. Mr. Basketball is such a prized award that even being considered as a candidate should be viewed as the highest of compliments. Carlos ‘Scooby’ Johnson deserves that high praise and should be considered one of the favorites to win the Mr. Basketball title.
Johnson is a 6’7″ senior small forward that attends Benton Harbor High School. He’s a 4 star prospect that Prep Hoops Michigan has ranked #2 in the state’s senior class. Johnson played grassroots basketball with The Family. In 11 games on the Nike EYBL circuit, he averaged 15.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg, and 2 6 apg. Johnson is considered by many as a borderline top 100 prospect nationally. In my opinion, he fits squarely inside the top 100. He’s headed to Butler next season and is the highest ranked recruit that Head Coach Lavall Jordan has landed so far.
Johnson is a new age combo forward that has all the intangibles. He has a college ready physique and the brute strength to go with it. Johnson is a versatile athlete and is tough as nails. He’s a unique combination of speed and strength. Johnson is a bona fide stat sheet stuffer that contributes in so many different ways. He’s a blue collar type player that can defend anywhere on the floor. Offensively, Johnson can play on the perimeter as well as mix it up in the paint. He has an underrated finesse game and is a good passer, especially from the interior. Johnson can simply bulldog his way to the bucket on a dribble drive.
Scooby Johnson has had a memorable and historic basketball career so far. He thrives in big games. He seems to excel on the basketball court in tough environments. As a sophomore, Johnson had 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 65-64 overtime Class B state championship win against Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
One thing is guaranteed: Johnson will have more big games and big moments in his senior season. If winning Michigan’s Mr. Basketball is one of them, it will be well deserved.
