Continue ReadingThe Papillion LaVista Monarchs were looking for their first home win of the season on Friday night when they faced off against the Omaha North Vikings. Papillion came out hot, while Omaha North struggled to get an offensive rhythm going. The Vikings fought hard to stay in the game but went into halftime down by 9. The second half was a similar story as the first, and Papillion LaVista’s size and shooting led them to an 82-58 victory. These are the players that impressed in Friday Night’s contest.
From Omaha North
Wal Chuol – 6’3 Guard – Class of 2020
One of the states top prospects is an athletic senior from Omaha North named Wal Chuol. The senior guard has next level size, but doesn’t rely too heavily on his size and strength to score. He has a pretty shooting stroke and a tight handle that he uses to size up defenders on the perimeter. Wal can spot up from deep or dribble into 3s in transition. Choul was battling some flu like symptons friday, but was still able to make some plays and score 14 points. The best play of the night came when Wal slowly trailed a Papillion player attacking the hoop in transition. As soon as the shot went up, Wal met it near the top of the square on the backboard and sent it out of bounds.
Curtis Ogba – 5’3 Point Guard – Class of 2021
Curtis Ogba is a competitive point guard that will pester you on defense all night. Whatever Curtis lacks in size he makes up for with grit and effort. He picks up the ball handler near half court and pokes the ball free anytime he gets a good look at it. Ogba is great at creating space with the dribble. His best play of the night happened when Omaha North’s offense was struggling and he took matters into his own hands by burying a pull up jumper from around 25 feet.
Evan Decker – 6’3 Forward – Class of 2020
Evan Decker came off the bench at Friday’s game to give the Vikings some extra size and rebounding. Decker is strong with broad shoulders but looks most comfortable playing on the wing and stretching the floor. However, due to a lack of size on Omaha North’s roster he spends a lot of time battling with posts on the interior. Decker should be one of the best players coming off the bench in Nebraska this season if that continues to be his role.
Keshaun Williams – 6’0 Guard – Class of 2022
Keshaun Williams tied Chuol’s point total with 14 points, despite picking up early fouls and spending much of the first half on the bench. Williams is a physical defender, which got him into trouble in the first half, but sparked a run for the Vikings in the second half. In the 3rd quarter Keshuan went on a 7-0 run by himself, which included getting a steal and taking it the other way for 2 and knocking down a three-point shot. More often than not, Keshaun’s intensity on the basketball court will be an advantage to him and his team.
From Papillion La-Vista
Luke Lindenmeyer – 6’4 Guard – Class of 2022
Luke Lindenmeyer scored a game-high 21 points by knocking down 3s, attacking the rim, and converting on free throw attempts. Listed at over 220 pounds, Luke is tough to stop when he is headed to the hoop. He does a good job of using his body to knock people off his path without extending his arms or pushing off. Defenders are left no choice but to foul once he has buried them under the rim. Unfortunately for Omaha North, Lindenmeyer is an 89% shooter this season from the line and went a perfect 8/8 against them.
Kyle Igwerson – 6’5 Forward – Class of 2022
Papillion-LaVista’s halftime lead can largely be attributed to Kyle Ingwerson lights out start to the game. At 6’5 Ingwerson shoots it well from deep and handles the ball well enough to be a point-forward on occasion. Through the first half, Kyle created shots for himself and scored from every level. In the second half, Igwerson drew some extra attention and he let his teammates go to work. He finished the game with 19 points and went 8/11 from the floor including 3 three-point shots.
Preston Kellog – 6’6 Center – Augustana Commit (Football) Class of 2020
Preston Kellog is an imposing 6’6 center weighing in at around 300 pounds. He will be continuing his athletic career next year with the Augustana Football team. For now, Kellog is an impact player and interior force for the Monarchs. The senior big man is impossible to move off the block or get around for a rebound, but he is not all size and strength. Against North, he showed off how light he is on his feet when he finished a euro-step layup to avoid an offensive foul. Papillion runs efficient offense through Kellog because he gets deep position inside and can find the open man when help rotates to him.
