The game was nearly sold out and gave a tournament like vibe. Most importantly, the amount of young talent on display was incredible to watch. Below I take a look at the top prospects from the game.
Gabe Cupps (2023) Centerville- You know you are a solid player when media outlets like SLAM and Overtime are in attendance to watch your home opener. Cupps impressed me with his ability to make plays on both ends of the floor. Defensively he was a shutdown defender with his footwork and lateral quickness. He did a great job offensively as well as he showed off his ability to shhot beyond the arc and attack off the dribble drive. Only a freshman he truly has shown his ability to be the focal point for the Elks in the future.
Lawrent Rice (2023) Wayne- The other freshmen sensation to watch Friday was Wayne’s Rice. A smooth guard, he impressed with his wide offensive arsenal. Able to use both hands when attacking the rim, his ability to attack either side of the rim makes him tough to defend. When he does attack with the dribble drive, his ability to break down defenders and get in the paint at will was impressive.
Rich Rolf (2022) Centerville- The lengthy 6’7 sophomore definitely looked impressive and recovered from the knee injury that ended his season early last year. Rolf is persistent under the rim especially on the offensive glass. He used his length to consistently grab rebounds and showed an ability to be an inside-out threat.
Kebba Njie (2022) Centerville- The sophomore gave the Elks another lengthy option off their bench. His ability to knock down shots outside the paint is what separates him from his older brother. While he has the interior moves as well, I liked how he looked so comfortable with the ball in his hands. At 6’8 he is going to be a future star for Centerville.
Elijah Brown (2022) Wayne- The 6’6 sophomore impressed me with his confidence and ability to play tough and body up with the size Centerville had. One of the most impressive moments of the day was when Elijah blocked Mo Njie on a layup attempt. He is incredibly strong for a sophomore and plays with a lot of physicality and passion. He is going to be a future go-to guy for the Warriors as they continue to face off against Centerville and their size in the paint.
Malcolm Curry (2021) Wayne- One of the better ball handlers on display, Curry handled pressure from Centerville’s backcourt throughout the night. Able to use both hands and attack the rim at will, he sparked the offense for the Warriors with his speed and ability to get in the paint.
Mo Njie (2020) Centerville- The most intriguing and talked about prospect in this game, Mo is such a weapon on both ends of the floor. Offensively, his length and size is impossible for most teams to matchup against. On the defensive hands, he is too long to get a clean shot off. Usually meaning forced shots or blocked shots for Wayne.
