Throughout this season there have been plenty of unsigned players who have stood out whenever I’ve seen them play and deserve recognition for their efforts. Let’s take a look at some of these prospects before we get into the meat of the district schedules.
SIR ISSAC HERRON
- 6’8 F/G – Lamar High School – c/o 2021
Sir Issac is a long, athletic prospect that can effect the game in multiple ways. In the games that I have witnessed, he has been able to dominate the paint on both ends of the floor. Defensively, he excels at protecting the rim and rebounding. In addition, he is nimble enough to guard the pick and roll from the ” big” position. He runs the floor well, plays above the rim and is capable of stretching the floor with a nice perimeter jumper.
JOSH FARMER
- 6’8 F/G – Sharpstown High School – c/o 2021
Josh Farmer is another long and athletic prospect that leaves his stamp on all the games he plays. His length allows him to be effective down low, however, his slight build allows him to move weave effectively through traffic. Although Josh starts at the forward position, he has a solid guard skill set which he uses to his advantage. He causes mismatch issue for opposing team due to his versatility.
JOSH FANUIEL
- 6’5 F/G – Elkins High School – c/o 2021
Josh Fanuiel is a prospect that you can tell works on every aspect of his game. With his back to the basket, he is creative and has great footwork which presents him with easy opportunities at the basket. In addition, he has solid vision which allows him to find his teammates in advantageous scoring positions. He can shoot efficiently from the perimeter, and he also can play AND defend multiple positions.
LONZO RAND
- 6’3 Guard – Westfield High School – c/o 2020
Lonzo has looked like a man on a mission in the early going of his senior year. He has been relentlessly attacking the rim and he is among the best in the city at defending on the perimeter. Lonzo is a three level scorer who also possesses a healthy point guard skill set. Defensively, he has active hands, great feet and knows his rotations. This creates a lot of turnovers for opposing teams while starting the break for Westfield.
JAKE ARNOLD
- 6’2 Guard – Katy Taylor High School – c/o 2021
Jake Arnold has continued to be efficient from all areas of the floor. And he also has continued to work, get even better and allow his game to evolve. One example of this is his new found confidence in attacking the basket, going to the left. Previously, he was capable of attacking left while being productive, but for some reason he was reluctant. Well, that is no longer the case and Jake continues to add to his bag making him one of the most efficient scoring threats in his district.
OWEN LAROCCA
- 6’1 Guard – Fort Bend Christian Academy – c/o 2021
Owen’s reputation of being a dead eye shooter proceeds him, anyone who has seen him play will tell you. He is able to get to his spots with ease and once he gets to the, it is lights out. One of the things that may go unnoticed is his conditioning. Owen very rarely stops moving which gives him even more opportunities to get his shot off. His conditioning also assists him in playing defense, as he is able to stay in front of the opposing ball handler and play help side defense.
ELIJAH THOMAS
- 6’2 Guard – Ridge Point High School – c/o 2020
Elijah was EXTREMELY efficient with 23 points vs Northside in the Fort Bend ISD Tournament. And this game was a great representation of how he normally plays. He is active on the defensive end and that translates into easy baskets on the other end. He is a three level scorer that would average more point if he was a bit more aggressive. However, being a team player and keeping everyone else involved is also what makes him a great prospect.
DERRICK BROWN
- 6’0 PG – St Pius X High School – c/o 2020
I have been impressed with Derrick in every game that I have watched him play this year. He does not make mistakes with the ball in his hands, he keeps teammates involved and he is efficient from three point land. His strong build allows him to absorb contact in traffic and finish at the rim. But there is no doubt about it, his quick release and his shooting ability are definitely the strongest part of his game.
