Five Takeaways:
Max Perez Shows Why He’s One of The Best Guards In The Area
Perez had the Hudsonville offense humming early, despite facing heavy pressure from the Godwin Heights defenders. Perez’s 13 first-half points helped the Eagles establish a cushion in the early going, as they would retain the lead for the remainder of the game. When Perez wasn’t knocking down shots, he was attacking the Wolverine defense and hitting open teammates off ball-screen actions. Perez didn’t force shots and took the game as it came to him.
Indiana Tech, Cornerstone University and Aquinas College were all on-hand to get a look at the future collegiate guard. Consistent play like tonight makes Perez one of the most sought after guards for the programs that were in attendance.
Jakhary Towns Is a Future Star In The Making
Freshman guard Jakhary Towns looked like a veteran, battling Perez shot for shot at times. As Hudsonville established a lead in the second half, Towns hit a number of contested threes, keeping Godwin Heights within striking distance until the final buzzer. Towns scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, including one shot that was a good five feet behind the three-point line. Towns has only played two games in his varsity career thus far, but it’s clear that he will have many more big nights in his future.
Hudsonville’s Front Court Depth Is A Difference Maker
Senior forwards Jack Joldersma (14 pts), Johnny Miller (12 pts), and Justin DeGraaf (10 pts) overwhelmed the Wolverines at times, using their length to force Godwin Heights into contested shots. All three forwards flashed the ability to step outside and knock down perimeter shots, showing that stopping Hudsonville’s attack will be a difficult task for any team it faces this season.
Ru’Quan Buckley Is A Load To Handle In The Post
The junior 6’6″ big man was everywhere for the Wolverines tonight, scoring 10 points, grabbing rebounds and loose balls and playing with relentless effort on both sides of the ball. Buckley is extremely physically advanced for a junior, giving Godwin Heights a physical presence that will be tough to match up with. It’s easy to see why Buckley has a number of Big Ten football programs’ attention.
Brighter Days Are Ahead For Godwin Heights
The Wolverines are off to an 0-2 start, however that doesn’t mean the Wolverines won’t have a great season. Godwin Heights dropped their opener on Tuesday to a tough South Christian squad and will have another tough test when they battle Grand Haven next week. Playing a grueling non-conference schedule will provide Godwin Heights with experience going up against some of the best teams in the area. Don’t be surprised if these early season losses fuels this team for greater success later in the season.
