Both teams came into the game undefeated but you can tell that the teams are trying to find their way and players are attempting to find the correct role. Lumberton would take the lead in the 2nd quarter, going into halftime with an eight point lead and even though New Hanover would respond and eventually tie the game, Lumberton would take home the win 53-51.
Lumberton HS Senior Jordan McNeill: Finished the game with 19 points and 7 rebounds, bringing the energy that we have seen from him over the last four years. He doesn’t take plays off on either end of the floor, and seems to seek out opportunities to bang and bruise inside the paint despite his height.
New Hanover HS Sophomore Dee Barnett: The second half was where we really got to see him do what he does best, he would score 9 out of 13 of his point in that half and make some keys plays for the team. He possesses the combination of scoring, ball handling and facilitating ability that you love to see from a PG, especially at such a young age.
Lumberton HS Senior Dwayne Davis: He didn’t have an eye catching day stat wise but he could be the player that helps this team in a major way this year. His versatility to play the guard spot as well as playing inside the post are all things that he does well.
New Hanover HS Senior Scotty Deffinbaugh: Made good plays on and off the ball for his team, one attribute that we really liked about him is that he seems to be a natural leader, constantly communicating with teammates and coaches. Also he’s a dual threat Guard, you can play him at the PG spot as he has the IQ to make correct reads, or at the SG spot as he is a knock down shooter.
Lumberton HS Junior Charlie Miller: Understands his role on the squad and plays it well, he doesn’t try to overdo anything and moves well without the ball. He has good shooting form and a pretty quick release, knocked down some shots and finished with 9 points.
New Hanover HS Sophomore Abrahm Driver: Really like the upside of this youngster as he seems to already have a nice overall skillset and good size at 6’5. The first quarter was where he really got his opportunity to shine as he scored 8 out of his 11 total points in that period.
New Hanover HS Freshman Khalil Genwright: Showed that he has a chance to be a special player before it’s all said and done. He was outstanding rebounding the ball, pulling down 16 boards on the night and he showed the ability to score inside and outside the paint as well. These minuets and opportunities that he’s getting early on in the season will only help him as time goes on, he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
