The morning session of Day Three of the Les Schwab Invitational was full of local Oregon teams with early losses in the tournament. However, these teams could not afford to let up, as the games provided intriguing match-ups of Oregon teams and in certain scenarios, teams that could meet-up later in the season.
Battle Ground versus Lake Oswego was a game of interesting dynamics, as Kaden Perry paced Battle Ground all morning long against Lake Oswego’s team oriented attack. Lake Oswego’s unselfish ways proved to be effective, as they took down the Tigers 54-48, receiving key contributions throughout their line-up.
The following game provided a 6A match-up between West Linn and Jesuit, two teams that have already played against each other and may very much so meet in the State Tournament. West Linn’s tandem of Jackson Shelstad and Micah Garrett was in full effect for the entirety of the game as the duo combined for 31 points. The Crusaders employed their classic motion offense, leading to good, open looks, led by James Lang. Ultimately, West Linn’s freshman-senior tag-team in Jackson and Micah was too much for Jesuit, as they took down the Crusaders, 56-45.
The last game was a showdown between Clackamas and Ben Gregg versus last year’s 5A State Champion, Wlsonville. Although the Wildcats were without injured Dakota Weber, their fast acting passing offense dominated the Cavaliers for a majority of the game. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter with Ben Gregg’s smooth, calm demeanor that lead Clackamas over Wilsonville, 63-53.
Top Performers
Kaden Perry (Battle Ground HS) – the 6’8” junior was working on all cylinders, playing with an intensity unmatched by anyone else on the court. His high motor along with overall skills translated into a monster game for the Gonzaga commit, as he poured in 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He was active on defense, altering shots and grabbing boards, being an enforcer in the middle for the Tigers. On offense, not only did he use his wide offensive arsenal to score at will, but he was active on the offensive rebounds, getting second and third attempts at the basket. Perry truly played the entire basketball court and gave Battle Ground a fighting chance against Lake Oswego.
Trace Salton (Lake Oswego HS) – Salton refused to be intimidated by Kaden Perry, going at Washington’s premier post player every possession. Offensively, he found different ways to score against Perry, with a combination of jump shots, layups, and hook shots. Defensively, he didn’t totally contain his assignment, but he stood his ground and made Perry work for his shots. Salton had a standout/break out game for the Lakers, providing them with an offensive spark in the paint while maintaining composure against a dominant force in the post.
Jack Chulmak (Lake Oswego HS) – the senior transfer from Newberg showed that he is a leader on the court for the Lakers this season. The 6’3” guard was active all game long, pestering defenders with his physicality and quickness, finding ways to score despite Kaden Perry in the middle,. He simply found ways to contribute to the Lake Oswego win any way possible. Chlumak finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 steals, as he provided the Lakers with an individual that contributed too the win by any means necessary.
Micah Garrett (West Linn HS) – Micah Garrett did what Micah Garrett does, providing the West Linn Lions with a veteran leader offensively, looking poised and experienced. The senior led all scorers with 19 points, scoring in a myriad of ways. He finessed his way into the lane and finished strongly, with several and-ones and displayed his mature mid-range game as well. When the Lions needed a bucket, they looked no further than the veteran, as he showcased his extensive offensive game.
Jackson Shelstad (West Linn HS) – the freshman phenom only took seven shots, but made the most of them. He converted 4 of 7 shots and 2 of his 4 three-pointers for a total of 12 points to go with his 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. His uncanny patience for a freshman was shown throughout the game as he never forced or pressed the issue, but simply made the right play at the right time. His tight handles to go with his play making abilities were illustrated throughout the game, as he had an overall solid game for West Linn.
James Lang (Jesuit HS) – the junior provided stability for the Crusaders, leading them with 15 points. Lang found ways to contribute, knocking down jump shots, including 3 three-pointers. Lang also contributed tough defense on West Linn, adding in 3 steals. He knocked down the jumpers for the Crusaders when they needed him to and showed composure down the strength despite the tough West Linn guard play.
Ben Gregg (Clackamas HS) – was the engine of the slow roll dominance Clackamas had over Wilsonville as the junior had an immense game depicted through his box score. Gregg led the Cavaliers with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocks. He was automatic in the paint all game long, as Wilsonville simply didn’t have an answer for his size in the low post. When the attention was all on him, he found ways to involve his teammates, finding them for easy scores. Because of his height and athleticism, he was shown to be a capable rebounder and defender at the rim.
Gabe Reichle (Wilsonville) – the savvy point guard for the Wildcats showed his quickness and many ways to score, as he finished with a game high 22 points. He maneuvered artistically through the defense and found ways to finish despite contact. He also showed his jump shooting abilities and applied solid defense on the Clackamas guards.
