While this year no team from Oregon was able to pull off an upset, there were some pretty good efforts as all four games were very competitive. Here’s a look at the top performers from the in-state teams on Thursday night:
Jackson Shelstad (2023 West Linn) – Stats: 20 pts, 4 assists, 5-12 3pt
This was the first time we’ve seen Shelstad play in a regular season game for West Linn and we continue to be impressed with his growth right before our very eyes. The 5-foot-11 guard already has a mature feel for the game and his decision making continues to improve. His outside shot is high level and he nailed some big-time shots against Norcross in West Linn’s comeback and he wasn’t afraid to take it in against Norcross’s length.
Gabe Reichle (2020 Wilsonville) – Stats: 23 pts, 6 assists, 9-12 fg, 4-6 3pt
Reichle started off hot and was able to take on a heavier load offensively during the game when Reber was out of the game with an injury. The 6-foot guard confidently and strongly took it to the hole for finishes while also stepping out and flashing his range from deep. In the second half there were some times where Eastside Catholic’s pressure gave him some trouble and he finished with eight turnovers, but overall it was a good performance from the high-academic senior.
Dakota Reber (2020 Wilsonville) – Stats: 14 pts, 5-11 fg
You can’t teach great athleticism and that’s some of the natural ability that Reber has. He rose high for a couple of impressive dunks, one of which – a finish of an alley-oop – he came down funny and injured himself. Reber sat out for a bit but came back and was still able to get some buckets. Reber’s three-ball has a very high arc but it does go in, even though his percentage wans’t as high on this evening.
Jack Chlumak (2020 Lake Oswego) – Stats: 19 pts, 6 rebounds, 8-9 fg, 2-3 3pt
Chlumak was a key reason why Lake Oswego was able to hang around with Bishop Gorman for the entire first half and some of the second. The 6-foot-3 guard was tough getting to the basket and finishing well, but also showed that his outside jumper has improved and knocked down some long perimeter shots including a couple of threes. Chlumak also spent a good amount of time handling the ball and was able to deal with some of the pressure that Eastside Catholic threw at the Lakers.
Trace Salton (2020 Lake Oswego) – Stats: 12 pts, 4 rebounds
Of all the guys on the Lakers, Salton was the one that most confidently took the ball strong to the hole and finished over Bishop Gorman’s more athletic players – in particular Mwani Wilkinson. The 6-foot-4 wing/forward focused on creating off the dribble and then using his body to absorb contact and create space in the lane for some shots – some of which were contested well but still went in.
Liam Ruttledge (2021 Jesuit) – Stats: 18 pts, 6-10 fg, 4-6 3pt
Ruttledge has impressed us each time we’ve seen him play this year at Jesuit. The 6-foot-2 guard plays with a bit of a chip on his shoulder and doesn’t back down from anyone, even with his frame that could use some strength. His lefty stroke is fairly smooth and he converted both catch-and-shoot and dribble pull-up opportunities from deep and mid-range.
