The day 1 action did not disappoint as several standouts stole the show. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the top Day 1 standouts.
Meshach Hawkins 6’2 SG Chaparral 2020 – I love watching Hawkins play. Today he treated the fans to the full array of his offensive game. He finished, he defended and created plays for his teammates. Hawkins filled up the box sheet finishing with 12, 7 and 6, in helping Chap to a victory.
John Board 6’1 SG Basic 2021 (#22 2021) – John Board is one of the players I will be watching closely this season. He plays so hard it’s almost impossible for him to have a bad game. He played with his usual tough, competitive spirit. Board finished through contact and showed the ability to separate from defenders and create shots for himself. Basic plays Silverado tomorrow in what may be the game of the day.
Nick Hopkins 6’5 PF Aquinas 2021 – Nick Hopkins played good. I mean 40 and 30 good. I don’t know if he really got 30 rebounds or if he got more. All I know is no one else got any when he was on the floor. Absolute physical specimen who was the clear cut dominant player on the day.
Azavier Johnson 6’2 SG Faith Lutheran 2021 (#11 2021) – I didn’t have Johnson in my Breakout Performer article. Partly because he’s already known, however, this tournament could be the catalyst for a huge year for him. The ball was in Johnson’s hands a lot today, and he took advantage of it. He was at his best driving to the hole and creating plays for teammates He finished with 17 as Faith advanced.
Nick Valencia 6’5 C Mountain View 2020 – I’m a big fan of bangers with dancers feet. Valencia was that. I only saw a half but that’s all I needed as Mountain View was up by 40. He showed range out to about 15, and overpowered in the post. Soft hands, and displayed a nice touch around the rim.
Riley Fornerette 6’0 PG Dysart 2021 (#77 PHA 2021) – Fornerette is must-see basketball. He has a brilliant handle, and can get anywhere he wants on the floor. Shoots it effortlessly and with range. He exudes a confidence that lifts his whole team. Finished with 21 against a long athletic Silverado squad.
