Zondrick Garrett II, Oxford: In the first round, Zondrick got into early foul trouble and the fans did not get to see him play the entire game. In the quarters, he drew a lot of attention from Huntsville’s defense, but that opened up his teammates. He still dominated with 14 points and 15 rebounds. It was exciting to see him play above the rim, rocking several alley hoops. In the semis, he still was a force to be reckoned with recording 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 blocks. He fouled out with roughly 3 minutes to go in the most pivotal time of the game and potentially hurt them from getting to the finals.
Rylan Houke, Oxford: Rylan had a very impressive overall performance in the first game of the day. He presented a dual threat inside on the glass and outside shooting the ball. Everyone knew Zondrick Garrett was the star player and it really allowed Rylan to shine. He is not the most athletic player on the court, but very sound fundamentally with his footwork and being in the right spot on the court. He finished with 22 points on 8-13 shooting and grabbed 8 rebounds. He needs to protect the ball better, as he had 8 turnovers. In the semis, he really struggled only shooting 1-4 from the field. He got to the line twice and finished with 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
Corey Vicker, Sparkman: Corey is an extremely reliable player. In both games, he came off the bench and played a total of 46 minutes for the day. In game one against Grissom, he shot 45% for 17 points including 4 threes. In the semis against Bob Jones, he again shot 45% for 14 points. Expect him to be a difference maker later on in the season.
Jacobi Godwin, Sparkman: Jacobi was hot in the first half of the quarterfinals. He loved the corner three pointer and had four first half threes. He had an unconventional set shot and did not get much lift under his shot. That worked against a weaker Grissom team, but with better defenders and tired legs, his shot is more susceptible to miss. He hustled well, particularly in transition, not giving any easy baskets. He finished 6-13 for 17 points and 5 rebounds. In the second game against Bob Jones, he struggled going 3-13 from the field and 2-10 from deep. This was a good example where that set shot will fail and it is important to still make shots in big games. Regardless, still an impressive day two for the senior.
Jalen Myers, Bob Jones: Jalen is potentially the most dominating athlete in the entire tournament. In the first game against Fairfield, he put up 17 points and 13 rebounds. More importantly he shut down the big Reginald Perry from Fairfield. He’s got lengthy range for someone his size shooting 3-3 from deep in game one and 2-3 in game two. In the second game, he really stood out when it mattered. Big time players always rise to the occasion. He filled up the stat sheet and shot 12-18 from the field for 29 points. He also grabbed 21 rebounds, 9 being offensive and dished out 5 assists.
Jalen Jackson, Bob Jones: Jalen Jackson really showed out today. He’s in a great position to shine with the stars of Jalen Myers and Jadan Coleman on his team. In the first game, he shot a perfect 7-7 from the field to finish with 14 points. At only 6’2″, he was given the challenge of guarding 6’6″ Reginald Perry and he never backed down. He hedged well in defending the pick and roll and was able to get his hands in for deflections. He all but sealed the game with a monster two handed dunk with 90 seconds to go and sucked the life out of Fairfield’s final push. In the second game, he made his presence known again. He went 6-9 and finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Jalen knows his place on the team and executes extremely well night in and night out. Jalen’s a player that every coach wants on his team.
Toney Tony, Mae Jemison: Toney was easily the best player on the floor for the Jemison Jaguars in the quarterfinals. He played hard on both ends attacking the basket and chasing down to contest shots. He’s extremely hard to guard when he gets going to the basket. He electrified the crowd with a two handed slam. He finished with 15 points and 5-13 from the field. In the semifinals against Oxford, he exploded for 24 points and recorded 6 steals. He’ll lead the Jaguars into the championship against Bob Jones and later into the season as they begin area play.
