Continue ReadingHudson and River Falls jockeyed for leverage in the Big Rivers conference last night, and ultimately, Hudson pulled out a 59-47 win, moving to a 3-0 record.
The narrative of this game was defense, particularly how Hudson brought it with contagious energy. Hudson also had the benefit of junior Luke Healy, who kept Hudson in the driver’s seat and willed a key second half scoring spurt.
These two teams will meet another time this season, and while I expect a completely different style of play and increased efficiency all around, Hudson currently holds the advantage.
Luke Healy – Hudson – 2021: Healy’s multidimensional game picked and jabbed at River Falls’ defense. He’s quick enough to sneak into the lane, and strong enough to finish when met be crashing defenders. Additionally, his sense for when to shoot and when to create paired seamlessly with his driving instinct.
For scouts who like efficient scoring, an automatic mid-range shot and on-court leadership, consider Healy a textbook recruit.
Zac Johnson – River Falls – 2021: Johnson played with less efficiency than normal. The first half saw the guard struggle with turnovers to pair with an inconsistent offensive output.
The second-half spun a different narrative. He forced less and found more of a groove on defense and at the stripe.
Mike Johnson – River Falls – 2020: After a rock solid season debut, Johnson followed up with another consistent product. He possesses unique strength, athleticism and hustle, catering to his fix as a defensive stopper and glue guy.
Michael Schurman – River Falls – 2022: Schurman’s scoring efficiency rushed to the fore in the first half. As both teams searched for rhythm, Schurman entered the game and immediately launched from beyond the arc then sliced through the lane for a layup. His energy-burst gave River Falls leverage early, although it tapered off towards the end of the half.
Charlie Neuenschwander – 2020: Lack of height didn’t soften his bullish paint play. The senior took his shoulder into the heart of River Falls’ frontcourt, finding a handful of two and three foot shots despite struggling from the mid-range.
If he extends his range and hones his efficiency, the guard profiles well to the next level.
JT Dougherty – River Falls – 2021: Height certainly plays in his favor, but he was ice from the field tonight. He faded from his shots often and found little consistency inside. But, even amid a rough night, his mobility and stroke at 6’9” stood out.
As a prospect, this wasn’t his coming out party, but he may see his stock rise later this year.
