A game in which starters dominated, we take a look at the standout prospects.
Jalen Sullinger (2021) | 5-10 PG | Thomas Worthington
20 points, 4 rebounds & a steal
From a scoring standpoint Sullinger led the way tonight. The junior absolutely torched it from deep, nailing five three-pointers. Often off of the dribble, putting the ball on a string and creating space. Tough shot after tough shot, Sullinger had it cooking in the first half. Also, showed his ability to finish at the basket, getting it up and over bigger defenders. On defense Sullinger communicated and called out help when needed, stayed with his man, got around screens. Great showing for the 5-foot-10 guard.
Matt Allocco (2020) | 6-4 PG | Hilliard Bradley
17 points, 3 rebounds
Allocco was the savior for Hilliard Bradley after trailing at the half. Scoring 12 of his 17 points in the second half, Allocco made it a point to play downhill and get to the basket. If he didn’t finish, he got to the line and knocked it down. As smooth of a free throw stoke you will find. Played tough defense as he always does, even when shots were falling for his opponent he was closely guarding. Communicated on defense very well, calling out switches and picking up teammates. The Princeton commit is next level every time he steps on the court.
Isaac Settles (2021) | 6-5 WG | Thomas Worthington
11 points
The junior was a big spark in the first half, scoring eight of his 11 points. Scored it in the mid range off the bounce, as well as behind the arc off the dribble too. Secondary passer that showed good visual in the half court, connecting on a lob. Settles did a good job defensively guarding Allocco, as we thought he would, making him earn majority of his points at the free throw line as nothing came easy.
Tyrese Hughey (2021) | 6-7 PF | Thomas Worthington
6 points, 4 rebounds, block
Hughey didn’t have a big offensive game, as that isn’t usually his style at the high school level. However, he did show a face up game, hitting a midrange jumper. Caught a lob, was effective with his side in the paint as well recording a big block at the rim. Hughey is in solid shape and will be a big timer for the Cardinals this season, just the beginning.
Tayshaun Mayfield (2022) | 6-1 PF | Hilliard Bradley
14 points, 9 rebounds
Friday night was the best outing I’ve seen from the sophomore, as he played his tail off with his brother out. Undersized inside, but simply out muscles and out works his opposition. Not a shooter by any means, but did show he could hit the 15-footer as the defense dared him to. Worked the offensive glass, gathering extra possessions, as he was on the defensive glass too. Big time outing by the sophomore who is also a standout on the gridiron.
Omari Effiong (2021) | 6-2 WG | Thomas Worthington
9 points, 3 rebounds
The energy that Effiong was able to bring to the game when his name was called was a difference maker for Thomas Worthington and was a big reason at times why it stayed close to the final buzzer. Effiong is a strong physical guard that uses upper body strength in the paint to compete with bigger players, holds his own on the glass too. The junior hit a big time corner three late in the game that gave Thomas Worthington a chance in the final seconds. Great energy player.
AJ Mirgon (2021) | 5-11 G | Hilliard Bradley three off catch
8 points, 3 rebounds, block
Mirgon worked well as a secondary ball handler for the Jaguars, at times showcasing his ability to hit open teammates, just like he did on the gridiron this fall. The junior scored it at the rim as well as from distance, really jump starting the second half run that Bradley needed to take control of this one. Mirgon has good reaction timing, as he quickly closed out on a quick kick out off an offensive rebound with the game on the line. Pure athlete.
