Nick MittelstaedtGame 1: Nick Mittelstaedt, 6-1 PG, Sr., Becker – In control of the entire flow of the game was Nick, a steady handler and outside shooter at the point guard spot. He’s tough and physical in the paint and has great peripheral vision when he draws two defenders. A final tally of 27 points and a few assists gets him the MVP honors in a close win over Holy Family.
Game 2: Shaheed Muhammad, 6-0 SG, Sr., North St. Paul – The Polars have been through possibly the toughest December schedule on paper this year and picked up their second win of the season Friday, a double overtime thriller over Maple Grove. The catalyst of a 14-point second half comeback was senior torch Shaheed Muhammad, who scored a total of 22 points and was 8-10 from the line, including the game-tying three in the first overtime and the game-winning floater in the second. With key pieces missing from the rotation right now Muhammad made a difference in a good statement win over the Crimson.
Shaheed MuhammadGame 3: Kody Alickson, 6-0 SG, Sr., Princeton – Helping get your team out to a sizable lead and victory by scoring 22 first half points is often enough to warrant a look at the MVP label. Alickson was on fire perfect from the field and the free throw line in the first frame and finished with 24 in a cruise control win over Rockford. The high powered Tiger offense fed the hot hand of Alickson all game and he delivered.
Game 4: Gabe Myren, 6-1 SG, Sr., Spring Lake Park – SLP vs STMA could be predicted as a physical, evenly matched game, but if Gabe Myren gets hot and finds a groove, that goes out the window. Myren was the dominant factor offensively with midrange shot creation, a hammering dunk and also applied great team D alongside the rest of the Panther lineup. A healthy 22 points on efficient shooting for the senior.
Game 5: Mason Lund, 6-6 SF, So., Sartell-St. Stephen – I was looking for a surprise in this game and I got it with the quick shooting stroke of Mason Lund. The Sabre wing is just a sophomore and he led the way for 15 first half points shooting well from all spots on the floor. Finished the game with 21 and a handful of rebounds. He’ll be a mismatch against other frontcourt players as he grows in agility and skill.
Game 6: Carson Gagnon, 5-8 PG, So., Annandale – Gagnon came out firing, with 17 first half points on five triples, giving the Cardinals a 37-15 lead. He was quieter in half two but provided that big spark and Tech never got closer than 11 after that. Comfortable shooting performance and he was being chased all game around the arc already.
