St. Joseph’s Metuchen has produced players such as Jay Williams, Karl Anthony-Towns, Wade Baldwin, and Marques Townes. Heading into the 2019-2020 regular season, the Falcons have some company when it comes to elite talent. There are also some hidden gems in conference play that will look to make a difference this season.
Jalen Jones (2021) | 6’2 PG | St. Thomas Aquinas
Jones was just a sophomore last season and took a backseat to Quadra Adams and Derrick Grant. The Trojans have had a big overhaul this season but Jones will certainly be in the mix. He showed his ability to score last season with four double-digit point games to open the season. Jones had a knack for getting to the line and knocking down free throws. His game will be at another level this season.
Tyree Taganeca-Ford (2020) | 6’2 SG | St. Joseph’s Metuchen
The Falcons received a wake up call last season when they finished second in their division. They used that wake up call and rode the momentum all the way to yet another GMC Tournament Championship. St. Joe’s will lose their two leading scorers from last season but No. 3 is back for one more year. Ford scored 10 or more points 14 times last season including a season-high 22 against East Brunswick. This season, Ford may not be a huge name heading in but he will be towards the end.
Jimmy Frage (2020) | 6’0 PG | Colonia
It is hard to replace 980 points in one season scored by two players. Chad Baker and Luke Valeriano have moved onto bigger things leaving behind a Colonia team that won 24 games looking for a new leader. Frage could be that guy. He was not a big scorer last season but showed what he could do in the second to last game of the season where he finished with 24 points in a win over West Morris. This is a perfect chance for a senior to step up and make a name for himself on one of the best teams in the GMC.
Josiah Brown (2022) | 5’8 PG | New Brunswick
New Brunswick won 17 games last season and will return three key players. One of them being Brown. As a freshman, Brown got off to a slow start but picked it up towards the middle of the season. He scored double-digit points six times in an 11 game span in the heart of the season. Brown will return to the team as a sophomore looking to up his scoring from his first year.
Nasir White (2021) | 6’2 SF | Dunellen
Dunellen will return their two leading scorers from last season where they finished with 20 wins. They were 15-1 in GMC play led by Tyje Kelton and Drew Johnson who both scored over 450 points. Another key returner is White. He did not show a huge ability to score but he did all of the necessary things on the court. Teams need players who are willing to make smart plays and not force. That is White. He will be a key piece to a Dunellen team who is looking to have another successful season.
