With so many games to preview it would be impossible to cover them all. For this week’s game previews, we take a look at the top 3 opening-round games of the Tarkanian Classic.
(1) Mayfair (CA) vs Desert Pines (NV) – If Mayfair is in town, that means another opportunity to see Josh Christopher and Dior Johnson. Mayfair is 4-2 on the year and Christopher is putting up a liveable 31 and 14. Dior is throwing in another 20 per. Those two alone are a formidable duo, however, add in Amir Kirkwood’s contribution and the Monsoons have a terrific big 3. Desert Pines will be looking to rebound from a hard-fought loss to Etiwanda in Pasadena last Saturday at the So Cal – LV Showdown. Milos Uzan will need help as he currently leads the team in points rebounds and assists. The Jaguar’s best shooters went a combined 0-14 from behind the arc last weekend. I don’t expect that to happen again.
(2) Corona Centennial (CA) vs Neuman Goretti (PA) – I was recently introduced to Corona Centennial basketball by Paris Dawson on Saturday. They are going to compete and play hard In addition to Dawson, Freddie Dybala is a quick-handed lockdown defender, and Mason Machado provides rebounding and interior defense. Freshmen Jard McCain played with the poise of a senior on Saturday. I’m interested to see how he fairs against one of the top teams in the country. Neuman Goretti is undefeated and well balanced. Hakim Byrd is their leading scorer, however Cameron Young, Chris Evans, Hysier Miller and Jordan Hall all average in double figures. This should be a high energy track meet that I’m anxious to watch.
(3) John Muir (CA) vs Corner Canyon (UT) – Last time I saw Trace Ross, he was giving buckets to a Dallas Showtyme team with about 8 D1 players. So I have to see him again. He is currently the leading scorer for the defending Utah 5A state champs. They come into this matchup 5-3. Ross and junior running mate Carter Welling take on a John Muir team led by Joseph Dollaway, Ethan Fleming, Emiliano Magdaleno and Assad Muhamad.
