PLAYA DEL REY, CA—I’ve been to a number of Trevor Ariza Tip Off Classics, but this year’s version of it was the deepest in many years. The semi-finals were scintillating as Heritage Christian defeated Etiwanda in overtime while St. Bernard survived the backyard tilt against neighboring Westchester. At the end of the day or Saturday night for that matter, Nick Bowden would hoist the MVP trophy as he lead St. Bernard against upstart Heritage Christian.
Jahmai Mashack (Etiwanda)
2021, WF, 6-foot-5, 185 pounds
Mashack will be one of the more heavily recruited wings in the WestJoel’s Take: Mashack is a no nonsense wing-type who does whatever it takes for his team to succeed. He has a great frame with good length and he’s a quality athlete. He can guard multiple positons, rebound in and out of his area, and his jump shot is on the rise. In the elbow area/mid-range area he can hit shots consistently. He is tough to deal with in the open court due to his aggressive mindset and feel for the game.
Chris Page (Gardena)
2021, SG, 6-foot-4, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Arguably the bounciest prospect at this event was this guy. Page has a wiry frame with very good length and he can score in bunches. In the open court he does an outstanding job of slashing his way to the basket and he can finish with either hand. He gets off the floor very quick and he gets solid lift on his jump shot. His motor fluctuates and that is an area that will need attention as will strength, as he struggled scoring through contact.
Ruke Agbabune (Hart)
2020, C, 6-foot-7, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Agbabune could have been listed under “surprises” label. He has a big frame with long arms and his hands are soft. He doesn’t possess great lift and his offense is still quite raw on the block, but he has a feathery shooting touch. He shows range out to the 3-point stripe and he is consistent at the elbow. Pick-and-pop 5-man for the DII level?
Brantley Stevenson (Etiwanda)
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Stevenson has bulked up and has become more explosiveJoel’s Take: Whether it’s blitzing up the court in transition and exploding to the rim or snapping a crisp pass to an open teammate, Stevenson always appears to be part of the play. He has gotten considerably stronger in the off season and as a result he is finishing through and over defenders at a more consistent rate. His jump shot is a tad erratic, but he hits enough of them to respect it.
Kyle Frelow (Heritage Christian)
2021, PF, 6-foot-6, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Mr. Blue Collar was the glue to Heritage Christian’s impressive run at this event. The chiseled 4-man has good length and solid timing that makes him an impressive rebounder in traffic. He can finish through contact in the paint and his motor runs hot. Continuing to improve his outside touch will improve his stock with college coaches.
