LA VERNE, CA—Each and every season The Classic at Damien continues to build it’s reputation and as it stands now, it’s the “must-see” tournament on the West Coast. With an eighty team field broken up into five divisions, quality and quantity are at your doorstep. With that being said here is the breakdown of our observations throughout the first day at the top two divisions: Platinum and Gold.
DJ Dudley (Fairfax)
2022, SG, 6-foot-3, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Dudley has been known in the Grassroots season as a high-energy slashing guard who was an inconsistent shooter. However, after the first two days at this event his jump shot looks to be much improved. He excels in transition and he has a quick 1st step and if his jump shot continues to show consistency he will be one of the more improved prospects in So-Cal.
Anthony Roy (Dublin)
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Roy came into this tournament with zero offers. However, if he continues to light it up like he has the last couple of games, he should be bagging some of those offers. This lefty has a smooth stroke with a quick release. Whether it’s off the catch or in transition he is consistent. In transition, he can slash his way to the rim and if the lane gets cut off he’ll snap a crisp pass to an open teammate.
Jahmai Mashack (Etiwanda)
2021, WF, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds
Mashack is one of the better two-way players in the Class of 2021Joel’s Take: This blue-collar wing is all about winning. He is a straight-line driver who can bully his way to the rim and he hits the glass at both ends with a vengeance. His jump shot was on during his team’s quarterfinal victory over Salesian as he drained four 3s. He needs to continue to improve his perimeter skills, but his game is defintely on the rise.
Shane Bell (Richmond/Salesian)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Bell has the prototypical rangy frame with long arms and he’s an explosive athlete. He shot it well from deep in his quarterfinal tilt against Etiwanda, but it’s inconsistent. He has the ball skills to get by defenders and a knack of getting to the rim. Defensively, he has the length and active hands to be a lock-down defender.
Isaiah Holm (St. John Bosco)
2020, C, 6-foot-9, 240 pounds
Joel’s Take: Holm is a big-bodied 5-man who has an impeccable touch from deep. He can defend on the block using his big frame and he knows how to carve out space in the paint. He has soft hands and decent feet and can finish with either hand. He doesn’t run very well, but he competes at a high level and has a high IQ for the game.
