LA HABRA, CA—I had the privilege of witnessing the epic battle between Mayfair and JSerra in last year’s championship tilt where DJ Rodman nailed a 3-pointer to win it for JSerra. Well, round two came into fruition thankfully as a Josh Christopher-led Mayfair squad took on an Ian Martinez-led JSerra squad for the second year in a row and the result was yet another spectacular game. Despite Christopher pouring in 42-points, his counterpart and Utah-bound Martinez countered with 34-points in leading his team to a 85-75 win.
Langston Redfield (Capistrano Valley)
2021, PG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Redfiled has a terrific frame with very long arms and big hands. He has solid speed and quickness with the ball in his hands, but he is not a burner. His major gift right now is his passing prowess. He’ll convert the look-a-head pass on the break or drop off a nifty pass in the half court set due to his excellent vision. However, the level of offers he earns will be related to the improvement of his jump shot.
Chol Deng (Fairmont Prep)
2022, SG, 6-foot-5, 170j pounds
Deng is a live athlete with ball skills and non-stop motorJoel’s Take: The wiry Deng plays as if he was shot out of a cannon. He is a slashing wing-type that slithers through defenders with ease. He has great balance and manueverabilty while splitting double teams and finishing though contact. His jump shot is solid out to the stripe, but it needs to get more consistent. Playing at different speeds and on balance will enhance his stock.
Francisco Borra (JSerra)
2020, C, 6-foot-11, 250 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the biggest surprises this season has been the emergeance of the Italian transfer Mr. Borra. He possesses a huge frame with good length and decent hands. His footwork is evolving, but he needs to do a better of bending his knees and playing on balance (plays too straight up). However, on the upside he shows an excellent touch from the elbow.
Elijah Shahid (Mayfair)
2020, WF, 6-foot-3, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: The bulky wing-type is somewhat hero for the Monsoon’s. Josh Christopher controls the offense with 2023 Dior Johnson—thus touches can be limited. However, Shahid does a nice job of spotting up and nailing 3-point shots and he is a strong finisher on the break due to his big frame and assertiveness.
