The game was close throughout but the Rough Riders managed to outlast the Tigers by a final score of 85-79. Here is a rundown of five takeaways from this contest.
ROOSEVELT IS A LEGIT DCIAA TITLE CONTENDER
Many wondered how the hierarchy in the DCIAA would shake out this year after another dominant run by the Tigers last season. Last night, Roosevelt declared their intent to compete among the big boys once again this year. Led by the hot shooting of 2021 guard Jasir Tremble, a transfer from Carroll, along with contributions from his backcourt mate Ryan Blakey, Keyon Ware off the bench, and Marcel Gabriel in the paint, the Rough Riders are looking like a bonafide threat to challenge for it all this season.
WILSON HAS THE POTENTIAL TO WIN IT ALL AGAIN
Don’t let this result fool you. The Tigers had chances to win this game in a hostile environment, and will certainly learn from this early-season loss. 2021 guard Miasiah Brown, who transferred from Cesar Chavez, looks like he will play a major role in his team’s success moving forward. It’s clear that with several new faces on the team, it will take time for this group to gel. We expect the Tigers to be a well-oiled machine by mid-January.
GUARD PLAY MATTERS
The DCIAA is known as a guard’s league, and that theory reigned supreme last night. In the first half, Roosevelt’s guards struggled, and the scoreline showed as they trailed by 4 heading into the locker room. 2021 Keyon Ware ignited the crowd in the third quarter before Tremble caught fire and the tide began to turn in Roosevelt’s favor.
BUCHANAN IS MATURING
2022 wing Darren Buchanan Jr., currently ranked as the top long-term prospect in the city, demonstrated impressive maturity last night regardless of the score. He was often heard encouraging his teammates to talk on the defensive end and showed good poise despite being constantly heckled by the Roosevelt student section. This maturity will be key as Buchanan will be asked to do a bit of everything if Wilson hopes to win it all.
QUICK TAKES
Phillip Carter adds an interesting dimension to this Wilson team. He is a stretch big who can knock down standstill threes from the corner but is also a solid inside presence who talks on defense and blocks shots. The Good Counsel transfer will need to be on his A-game, which includes staying out of foul trouble, for the Tigers to be at their best.
Eric Morgan, a class of 2021 guard from Wilson, is a new face who has intriguing potential. He is a solid on-ball defender who has good length and the ability to finish in traffic. Morgan sees the floor well and can make plays in half-court offense or in transition.
